Fresh Grabs

Hahaha! Regardless of the new cheap ones that i can't justify vinyl prices for I did have a collection of 1200 before vinyl (whittled down to about 700 now) that I wasn't just going to stop listening to! That whole lot of 9 cost me €32.50, that's about the same as a nice special edition of a new record...
Oh my problem is the reverse, I only have maybe 20-30 CD's and if I hook up the player that may swell............and I don't need that to happen, lol

@Joe Mac @AnthonyI I think CDs are such a waste of time an money. They're just clutter that inevitably end up scratched and loose in the footwell of your car. I don't even own a CD player in the house anymore. They are a fast becoming obsolete format.

I owned too many before I went to vinyl to just chuck them. Im not spending that again on vinyl for them all and I want to still listen to most that music from time to time. Also €1.50 for random 90s music is not really a waste of money, it’s like half a cup of coffee...

I’m also a bit particular with possessions (and my car actually) that things don’t get thrown like that they get put back in their place and I don’t allow rubbish in my car...

Funnily enough for all the talks of CDs dying out they still sell a huge amount more units than vinyl (in the U.K. in 2018 32 million to 4 million). Granted they don’t sell what they did in the 90s but with the rise of streaming I don’t think it’ll ever be possible for any physical format to hit those numbers.

They look ugly on the shelf too. I just don't see any point to them. Streaming has made them redundant.

I wonder what the demographic is of people who still buy CDs?

Older music fans and casual music fans I’d imagine. I know my dad is the only person I know who buys them in any significant numbers.

I’m not fully willing to commit to steaming on its own over the ownership of physical media, and have serious concerns over artist remuneration, but with the rise of hi res streaming and more and more big artists calling out the likes of Spotify it is admittedly going to get there at some point. It’s going to have to go up in price pretty significantly, or have some type of limitation of plays for more casual listeners, to make it a fair system though!

The demographic I’ve seen is older people who don’t want to deal with needing the space to store vinyl but still want physical media. A lot of old flea market haunts I used to go to have replaced vinyl sellers with CD sellers. It’s often cheaper than buying really hi res streaming files (at least when you guy used CDs) and quality is good. I’ll still buy CDs every once in awhile if they are really cheap but end up ripping them to FLAC and then re-sell or just get rid of the CDs.

When MP3 players started coming out I ripped and ditched most of my CDs, kept the ones near and dear to me so I don't have many. Streaming is convenient to me, nothing more at this point, so I'm not ready to invest in a "Better" experience at home. There's still something about owning an album, the 12x12 piece of artwork that is, or at least can be, the jacket, liner notes, printed extras about the album and so on.

My hesitation with CD's is I'll start grabbing everything not available on vinyl and to be honest, I have way too many vinyl albums I still want to start down the CD hole again, lol

Lord Huron - Lonesome Dreams (Blue Smoke vinyl)
Love that a Guster album. Saw them at a festival yesterday, and they brought out The Barenaked Ladies, who were at the venue next door. Great show, plus got the lp signed at a meet and greet following the show. Memorable.
