Guitar Players Thread

I've got that Roland JC-40 for a SS. I prefer tube but can't go wrong w the nice clean of the Roland. The digital chorus and reverb (kinda has a plate-like quality) are pretty good. Stereo and mono, to boot.
I agree, tone-wise tube sound more like the records I want to emulate. However, after owning it for the last year, it has cemented itself in my life, and I will never let it go. It’s like high fidelity, 3D guitar playing, especially with the chorus and a stereo delay. Plus, the quality of the sound is almost PA-like, which works great for keyboards and synths. Hopefully I will get one of those this year too lol.

Yes I know people use it for synths. Although I don't think it will hit quite the low freqs of a PA or keyboard amp. My only complaint is the treble can be a bit much to tame. Especially w that bright switch which can be ice picky and adds a lot of white noise. All and all though great amp at the price point.

Try using humbuckers if you aren't already. If you are and that's still an issue, an e.q. pedal is what you need.

No, it's just got hot treble. I just turn the treble eq low and mid up a bit but it can get sharp sounding real quick.

I mostly use my semi-hollowbody that has humbuckers w split pots (Ibanez SA2200). The split coils actually tame it better.

Edit: I will add that I have a Timmy pedal and that works nice cause it has both a bass and treble cut.

Wow! Fellow bass player here. That’s beautiful!!!

Thank you! I have a fender p-bass that I've had since I was....15? My dad gave it to me for a birthday, like, a million years ago, and I picked up a warwick 5 string off of facebook marketplace a few years back, but I've always wanted a ricky (but didn't want to pay 2k+ for one), so....

The setup on it is finnicky, I'm getting a lot of fret buzz unless I set the action incredibly high, so I think I'm gonna swap the nut out. I'm stalking nice pickups on ebay (bartolini? emg? first one I find that is in decent shape and an ok price, I guess.....)

Man, that seems like a really cool project
For some weird reason rickenbacker hasn't come down on them like a bag of hammers with the cease and desist so the kits are still up. They also have an explorer bass kit, if anyone is in their hair metal feelings.

The quality isn't insane tbh but it's an OK starting place. The pickups are pre-wired so all you really need to do is plug in the connectors. I'm switching out the pickups though, so at that point I'll need to do actual soldering.

I kiiinda wish I'd gone darker on the stain. I still might, but I'd probably have to do a lot of sanding. I'm learning a lot about proper neck setup though...

I’m going to get myself an electric guitar and learn to play. Has anyone used fender play app at all?

Following.
I have had people ask me about this before, but I don't personally know anyone who has used it.

What kind of learner are you? Visual? Oral/aural? Tactile?

I teach and those are things a good teacher would want to know. Fender Play aside, I could at least advise you on a good path for this.

EDIT: I realize there is about a 6-hour time difference between us, but I am more than willing to do a video chat with you to go a little bit more in-depth about this if you are interested.

All of my previous learning (non musical) is based on reading and doing - but that’s all finance related. I think for this my best bet is visual so I can watch, repeat and practice. The thing for me is being short on time - 2 young kids, long hours at work etc, so the appeal of short sessions in an app format that I can repeat at leisure / when I have time is the main driving force - over having to commit to formal lessons at a set time as I start out. Although having someone to correct technique, structure development etc is probably the best way to progress quickly.

@MadLucas I’d not seen this edit earlier - that’s a really kind offer of you, and something that would be good to take up at some point, if nothing else it’d be nice to chat to a fellow forum member in real life! I’ll have a scan through this thread at the previous newbie questions and tips first, get my kit ordered and then go from there.

My wife also wants to get a piano (she’s an oboe player at heart), so in lieu of having to mess around with tuning, larger footprint, noise etc I think we will get a Yamaha clavinova, so we will both have something new to learn at the same time which should provide some healthy competition. Although she’s much more musically talented than I.

NEW PICKUP DAY!!!
Put in a Curtis Novak JM-HC Argyle neck pickup.
The paddle switch chooses rhythm or lead circuit.
The on/on/on switch next to it chooses series, parallel, or single coil. All three options are available in both circuits the way I wired it up.

I am absolutely in love with this :)

Same.. just turned 50.. thinking about purchasing and learning to play an electric guitar. I feel like its now or never. Can't read music at this point either so expecting a long process. Was coming to this thread for recommendations on a good place to start my buying search so hoping to bend some of your ears for help.

I recently purchased the Fender MoFi table and will be buying a Fender guitar as they are really the inspiration for wanting to learn. Sunburst a must.. lol.B1CCFE90-C87C-45FB-951F-CE4C0F7D6ECF.jpeg

Don't feel like you need to learn anything in particular! Learning to play is definitely a journey, but it's always gotta remain fun. There are lots of ways to learn and play without traditional musical notation. Good luck to you and @Bsdmr2!
