Heathens - The DBT Thread

Once again failing at a no-buy month, I found a seller in Italy who had sealed copies of The Big To Do, Go Go Boots and English Oceans available, which completes the studio albums for me (and leaves only Alabama Ass Whupping for main DBT releases missing on my shelf). Shipping was a stinger, but even then, the price spread was reasonable. I'm particularly excited that English Oceans comes with a CD copy too, as mine is lost, and is the only CD missing from their entire discography in my car!

In 2004 the Drive-By Truckers released what would become the best selling album in their illustrious catalog. The Dirty South is a concept album that examines the state of the South, and unveils the hypocrisy, irony, and tragedy that continues to exist. The album features live show staples like, “Tornadoes”, “Where The Devil Don’t Stay” and “Puttin’ People On The Moon” as well as rarities like “Goode’s Field Road” and “Daddy’s Cup.”

The Complete Dirty South is a band-led rework of the original album. Principal member, Patterson Hood, took the reins and reimagined this record as it was originally intended. The complete version features resequenced audio, three additional tracks, four remixes along with updated vocals. The packaging comes with a perfect bound book featuring liner notes from Patterson Hood, track by track descriptions from Mike Cooley and Jason Isbell as well as never before seen photos along with updated artwork from the late Wes Freed.

“This ‘Director’s Cut’ is the way it was always intended to be heard” - Patterson Hood

It'll run you $14 more than the regular edition, but New West has a signed version on a much cooler "whiskey" colour than the yellow...

[$83 CDN pre-shipping, so I'm out!]

Email15 will take off 15%. Won't help on that insane shipping to Canada though :-(

@Ethos99 has the regular edition up for pre-order at Paladin now too!

Thanks to George Lucas, since the 90s I've always reserved a dose of skepticism for "special editions" etc.

Since the announcement of The Complete Dirty South, I have been mostly excited but also a little bit nervous - particularly about there being re-recorded vocals on this. Thankfully, that nervousness is all for naught. It's great! As I'd hoped and mostly expected outside of the Lucas-fueled anxiety.

Gonna have to wait an extra few weeks for my physical copy but I'm really looking forward to it!

I hardly ever read their reviews, and then only when someone recommends, so I appreciate the post.
Yeah, I try not to pay too much attention to their negative reviews, but I've been turned on to some good music by following up on positive reviews of the type of music I like. Such as this one, for an album I eventually ordered from Bandbox, received today, and am really liking. (In fact, I just used my gift card to order a second copy!)

Now that it's been a little bit. Thoughts on the new version of the dirty south? I don't own any copy of it and would rather not double dip

My physical copy won't arrive until later this week or early next, so I can't speak to that part of things, but the remixed, resequenced and couple re-recorded vocals make a damn fine listen indeed. I think it's a worthwhile endeavor, but it's also one of my favourite albums so I had bo hesitancy to double dip.
