It’s lyrically a 9 and musically a 6
Would agree with a light 8. The more I listen to this though the more I hear a lot of inspiration from Gambino's Because the Internet.
I used to severely dislike Craptony Fandango, then he started to get a little less self serious about his work which helped, but I’ve never actually sat through any of his reviews. My homie who is an extremely talented musician (in multiple bands in SD) and, as a Jew, grew up worshiping hip-hop after being introduced to the Beastie Boys at a young age texted me after finding time to listen to the album last night.
"First of all, Kendrick transends hip-hop at this point. The fact that he has managed to reach the top of the game while making almost entirely concept albums and refusing to play by anyone elses conventions... he belongs in the same breath as the all-timers of any genre.
Also, I'm scrolling the reviews and of course Pitchfork has the lowest score. They are always wrong when it comes to rap. If they were any wronger they'd be Anthony Fantago".
To which I reponded... "the only thing worse than The Needle Drop is people who take his reviews super seriously".
10 minutes later this review dropped and we both had a good laugh.
