Really good album but not really the game changer it gets painted as. To each their own and all that jazz but far from a masterpiece that it gets called, too.

Taste/Art are subjective to be sure. IMO Kanye is a once in a generation talent. His first 3 albums were great hip-hop records Then his run of MDTF, Yeezus, and TLOP are cultural touchstones that transcend genre. MBDTF in particular is where High Art, Critical Praise, and Cultural zeitgeist all intersect. There have certainly been better hip-hop artist but I think he is the most engaging artist to use hip-hop to express his artistic vision. Obviously art isn't better or worse just different. MBDTF is just a wonderful example of an artist leading instead of following; something rare and awe inspiring. I was glad to get an opportunity to live through a moment like this. I wasn't alive when the Beatles dropped Sgt. Pepper and I was a bit young to understand the full impact of Nevermind but I got front row seats for MBDTF and enjoyed basking in the glow of Kanye's brilliance.

I guess this is the part I can't wrap my head around. What exactly was he leading? Everything on MBDTF had been done before. So I don't see how / what he was leading with that album.

This is where perhaps your well-versed near encyclopedic knowledge of hip-hop might be a bit detrimental to your enjoyment of something with as wide of scope as MBDTF. Artist like Kanye or The Beatles, or Nirvana weren't wholly original they took their influences and combined and presented them in such a way that they were equal amounts exhilaration and palatable. I mean if I was a big fan of The Pixies before Nirvana showed up maybe I would not appreciate the quiet/loud dynamic when it came barrelling through my radio the first time I heard Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Me personally id remove like half of it lol add new names.. give more credit to the new wave.. give more credit to rappers who are the complete package not just lyricist..have lil wayne alot higher..ice cube alot higher..drake gone

Just to be controversial I wouldnt put royce even in the list or any of eminems lil crew.. eminem I have to just accept on the list cause of this earlier work but he is trash now.

DJ Paul = Barely a rapper/Hype Rap/Great producer
Juicy J = A rapper but nothing top 50 great/Great Producer
Koopsta = Underated but again not on a top 50
Crunchy Black = Nope
Gangsta Boo = A lil underrated but nope

All the other pop ins.. nope although I love lord infamous in smaller doses.

Sorry 36. Just aint happening.

Id expect it to be more traditional and more thought out and paying more respect to the old scene.
So drop that list ;) We need our resident hiphop bible to drop some knowledge.
