Hip Hop

Anyone see any of Noname going off on Twitter last night? Kind of all over the place and some of the tweets have been deleted but she quit music and is focusing on her book club.

Setlist:

Calls out black people for not showing up at her shows > Mix of support and “we don’t want to hear your slam poetry” from fans > She is quitting music because she no longer wants to perform for white people / the audience makes her uncomfortable

Yeah, she's been posting stuff about it for a few days. Bummer.

Yeah, lately she kind of sounds like she doesn't want anyone but black communists to listen to her, which is her right, but it seems like she could have promoted herself differently than through NPR and Fallon (for instance) if she wanted to minimize her white audience.

100% support her being upset at white dudes in the front row screaming the n-word. Can't understand why anyone thinks that's ok.

I think the way she said that other black artists who are uncomfortable with a predominantly white audience at their shows don't say anything because they are a slave to $$ was disrespectful to them as well, but it is obviously a complicated subject.

She already weirdly said she didn't want to do an LP press of Room 25 because she hated it, so I never bought that one. I should buy digital to support the artist, but I don't usually because I hold out for an LP.
 
Shared this over on the Fresh Grabs page, but you guys might dig it too.

Just got back from seeing JME at Rough Trade as part of an in-store signing/album launch gig. JME is a British grime artist (his brother is Skepta) and he hasnt released a new album in over 4 years. I took my copy of his previous album, Integrity, and he couldnt believe I had a copy, they only pressed around 150 as promo items and even JME doesnt have any. He gave the few he had away and said he regrets it now. Really cool guy and nice of him to sign both and chat for a while.

not sure if it's the same thing but I saw comments elsewhere where white peeps were whining about if a white artist said they didn't want a black audience the cancel culture mob would end their career.

I'm white but I completely get where NoName is coming from, just seems like she may not be expressing herself too well...or she's expressing herself too well and it's got some very insecure people up in a kerfuffle

I get where she's coming from, and I think she is right to be upset, but leading into the convo by saying "I'm about two books away from hating all white people" may not have been the best way to start if she didn't want people reading into it. I think the conversation about majority white audiences at hip hop shows is an important one and the assholes shouting the n-word is a plague on hip hop shows all around and needs to be squashed.

But, people in those comments were really complaining that the Boulder and SLC shows were mostly white. If they're booking shows in those places, I really am confused about what they expected.
 
Growing up in Chicago and knowing the neighborhood she grew up in, I can imagine the desire to want to fight to support black owned businesses and band together to keep the dollars circulating in those communities because the city and all of us have completely failed in giving these communities the same type of resources found in the neighborhood I live in just a few miles to the north.

As a white dude who has lived a pretty privileged life relatively speaking, I’m in no place to critique her frustration, but I do think the black separatist movement is unrealistic in this country. Again, easier for me to say but I believe in power in numbers, we will need the working class whites, latinos, black, and asian people to band together if the goal is to ever chip away at capitalism.

oh no, trust me.. just because I get where someone is coming from doesn't mean I necessarily agree with it. I also don't think there's an inherent problem with the audience an artist attracst if the artist is okay with it. I'm not going to condemn a mostly white crowd at a hip-hop show across the board, as some hip-hop artists don't mind or are downright appreciative of it. but if that's not the crowd you're trying to connect with, and if those who you are trying to connect with aren't showing up and supporting the artist I can certainly understand how and why that would be frustrating.

I agree, I guess why I am so confused at her attitude about it is that it seems like she was on a promotion track that focused on a bunch of majority white outlets and then to turn around and blame her black fans for not supporting her because most of the people at her shows are white, when she is playing in cities with a 2% black population is just a puzzling perspective.

I know it's way more complicated than that and she is right to say my perspective doesn't matter to her and she doesn't care what I think, it's just bugging my logical brain.

I'm also just personally genuinely surprised that these are her feelings. to be fair I don't really listen to her music, so these feelings may be completely evident to those who listen, but watching videos of live performances she seemed to have more of a chill, fun vibe.
