I actually throw them shits away sometimes because its annoying when I take the records out their bags lol! Mostly the VMP ones at least because i think they're ugly and i hate the shape. I do get some look cool though but I always notice there is a specific love for them.

I get that when buying new/vintage japanese reissues/editions, it is really cool to have a mint obi, because it is cool that it is standard original packaging, which is different from pretty much every other country, and a lot of them have great graphic design.

I have absolutely no problem with it on new western releases, even if it sometimes seems a little tacky when done by non-japanese labels in japanese just because *obis are kewl japanese things uwu* But, gouging extra for it when it costs them a couple bucks just as an excuse for extra limited editions is gross to me. Not worth it to me at all in those cases, but to each their own.

The rush all started for OBIs when the Japanese started doing superior drops (Highest audio quality) back in the day and now its just moved to what it is now.

I will begrudgingly give credit that the new VMP OBI is more pleasing to look at, but it's still not anything special imo. A lot of OBIs to me aren't worth the fuss but at the same time I can't bring myself to throw them out. Off the top of my head, the ones I know that came with them I own are the last clipping. and The Magic Whip by Blur, both of which I thought were pretty cool OBIs.
