It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

Fwiw. Since we r on Serie A. I miss Kaka Milan days
I watched a lot of Serie A in the early 90s. Foggy memories because I wasn’t even 10 years old. Sampdoria with Vialli and Mancini, Atalanta with Evair, Fiorentina and Batistuta, Parma and Signori, Klinsmann at Inter, and loaded Milan and Juve teams… Fun times.

Man I think I mentioned that match as one of my favorites when we did the thing. I know the pain. Why I have angst with Barca 16 years later

You have angst with Barca? Try having a pretty much perfect team. Capable of wiping the floor with all of Europe. But in the same era as Pep’s Barça. I have nightmares still…

Oh yes, those glory days! I can't watch enough highlights of those years!

Rui Costa as Batistuta’s 10 is was for sure a memory for me. Everyone love Fiorentina in those days!

I kinda hate that line because even the most one sided leagues are highly professional and skilled, it’s just there are vast financial discrepancies. In my brothers year at school was a lad who came through the ranks at our local league two team and ended up as a solid championship right back/centre half who played really well in his one PL season. He was a Zidane in my recollection of schoolboy football!

Anyway I digress. I think Juve’s spending power in a league that didn’t have that in general really hurt Italian club football over the last decade. At least their self-inflicted implosion has made it an exciting league again. And the quality of football is good. It’s just not Italy’s time on a European level. I think Lukaku’s relative successes at the sharp end of the PL and Serie A kinda show where both are at right now.

The Italians will be back at some point though. The country is too football mad for them not to be!
I played a game of 7 a side against a guy that was a Stenhousemiur junior, just about to go the the States on a scholarship. Even at his level the just in class was massive!

Lombardo at Sampdoria for me. And Joe Jordan’s pronounciations of the teams!

I remember him playing for a year at Palace and it being like they’d signed Maradonna given the hype! Parma were another legend of that time with Zola, Crespo, Veron, Chiesa and a teenage Buffon. I think Thuram and Canavsro were there too. Also crazy Tino Asprilla before he went to Newcastle.

As someone who doesn't follow MLS I have to ask - how did Austin FC go from expansion team last season to the second best squad in the league?

There are a lot of mechanisms that move talent from higher performing clubs to the lower performing clubs. Also the salary cap keeps things pretty even. It happens pretty regularly. Atlanta, LAFC come to mind. Seattle won the league last season and they are just near the playoff line.
