Agreed, that penalty was so soft. Can't VAR overturn something like that?

VAR can’t actually overturn anything. The principle is that the referee referees the game. If VAR feel he has made a clear and obvious error, or confirm with him that he hasn’t seen an incident, they can send him to the screen to review. The decision remains his.

I haven’t seen it but by the sounds of it while it might be soft there was contact. That makes it subjective, not clear and obvious, and so they’re not supposed to intervene.

Yeah, that's what I meant to say.

I am not a VAR fan by any means (especially when someone is called off side by a shoe lace) but was just curious

Regarding the Ronaldo pen, compared to some of the penalty awards I've seen in the SPFL this year it's a stone waller.

Yeah it seems they’ve set the offside tolerances too high. It was annoyingly like that in the PL too initially but they made the lines thicker and it’s been pretty good since that.

I hate VAR for open play decisions but for offside I actually think it’s a perfect use for it because it’s purely factual.

The problem we are having in Scotland (VAR was introduced a few weeks ago) is the handball rule. Some of the penalties given since VAR was introduced have been utterly ridiculous.
