It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

This is all too similar to the last games under Poch where we didn’t do shit with possession and needed Eriksen (Maddison) magic to open up teams who sit back. I’m not as worried because so many players will need to adapt to new tactics under Ange. Spurs didn’t look like they had a clue under the end of Poch, there’s ideas happening even though they aren’t pulling off today.

I’d be more worried with Son after last year you’d want a reaction but he looked miles off the pace.

Last year GW 1: WHY DID I PAY SO MUCH FOR TRENT!??

This year during GW 1: WHY DID I PAY MORE FOR TRENT THIS YEAR THAN LAST YEAR!??!
You bought a Liverpool defender?

Interesting rather than good game. Both sides have issues but look better than last year. Sterling had his best game in ages and Enzo impressed. Liverpool started hot but didn’t keep it going. Both look like they need a couple more bodies.

Both clubs had trouble with finishing and being more decisive in the final 3rd. It was also a start contrast in the midfield of both teams compared to Brentford/Spurs. There was much more time and space for players here than in the earlier match. Brentford are going to be trouble this season if they play like they did today.

Should be 60m tops. The market is absolutely fucked.
Yeah it’s telling that there is a shortage of top class holding/breaking up midfielders and strikers with some of the prices. I can understand it from Brighton’s point of view, they didn’t want to sell him unless someone did something crazy, and two teams did!

The market is absolutely fucked but the availability of world class #6s who can break down a deep block while also able to destroy a counter is about as rare as a world class #9 right now. He likely won't have cover from a double pivot like he did at Brighton but at Chelsea will most likely have wingbacks helping out. I thought Adams would have been a great fit and maybe a better value, butI also love caceido as I think the market for that type of player is going to blow up soon. I think we'll look at Newcastle buying Tonali as great business as the year goes on.

Honestly, if Liverpool go out and sign Lavia now they’ve a better deal at a still comically overpriced £50m. Not at the same level but younger, bags of potential and probably plays as the out and out holder they need in a midfield 3 with 2 others that like to bomb on.

As an aside part of me pines for the day when midfielders were midfielders and just did everything.

Also makes it seem like insane business that Spurs got Bissouma for 30m and Maddison for only 40m

Yes if Bissouma hits his Brighton form again. Maddison is a strange one but I think the fact he came from Leicester payed into that. Also with the exception maybe of Bruno top teams don’t seem to carry that type of player anymore, He‘s s talented lad though for sure, especially if you give him licence to roam and provide the necessary cover.

Bissouma was immense yesterday! got MOTM. Most passes, touches out of any PL midfielder over the weekend. If he can stay healthy and consistent it'll be his year.

If we still had Conte, Maddison would have no place. The club wanted to buy Maddison last summer but Conte didn't want him. He'd have to be played as a wing/AM in Conte's system because he'd not work in that midfield two. Same with Bissouma, he was ineffective under Conte in a midfield two. There were times when we added a third midfielder last season and dropped Son/Kulu and he played better. Ange always plays with 3 so we can accommodate both players now.

Also, Spurs got Bentancur for 20m which is an insane coup. Our total starting midfield when Bentancur returns will be about 90m compared to Chelsea's Caicedo, Enzo, Nkunku for almost 300m

I suppose what I was trying to say is that he isn’t a typical midfield three player like what Pep or Klopp might use in 433. He’s more a 10 in a 4231 or a 4411 and almost needs to be given a free role. A bit like Bruno has been at his best for us. That doesn’t appear in vogue in general and is probably why, combined with coming from a relegated side, he wasn’t going for a fortune, talent aside.

Maybe this WM in possession and almost 442/4411 out of possession that’s been developing at the top clubs will see this change.

If you can build that team around him though I’d be really intrigued to see what his ultimate level is.

I think the way we play under Ange will allow him a very free role in midfield. If it was another system he'd have to do more. I remember seeing Leicester fans moaning about him not doing a lot of defending last season and "giving up" on plays. Leicester had a shit defense last season so idk how much of that is on Maddison and/or their system. There was definitely a relegation discount because if Leicester hadn't gone down I don't think he'd have moved clubs at all this summer.

Ange plays with two "attacking 8s", one is Maddison and the other Skipp/Sarr (It'll be Bentancur when he comes back) with a sitting DM (Bissouma). He also uses inverted full backs that everyone seems to be doing now, with Cancelo, Zinchenko, etc. Because the fullbacks tuck inside rather than getting high and wide the DM is supported a lot more in possession and allows the 8s to get super advanced. Skipp scored 2 goals at Barca last week as an attacking 8 (!!). Maddison will probably get a handful of goals himself. He's 26, probably in his prime right now. I've always been a big fan of his even when he was at Leicester. I think he'll have a stellar season for us this year.
