It Could Get A Bit Messi In Here - The Football Thread.

20 years ago at the height of the O’Neill era absolutely, as well as the size of the club they were a good team. Now? They’re both big big club, historically bigger than any English club outside Utd Arsenal & Liverpool and the fan bases are huge and a bit nuts. But the squads and years of that money for the current top 6 or 7 would make it difficult for them initially. Stay up the first 2 or 3 years and appoint well managerially and absolutely they both have top 4-6 potential.

It’s all academic though, 14 premier league clubs are not going to vote for it.

There is no way the EPL is going to vote to bring sectarianism into their league. Both teams have a lot to do before they would even be considered.

I agree with you - with their current squads they would struggle, but given the chance to build they would have every chance.

I honestly think it will never happen and it’s mostly a kinda pub debate. The bigger six would love the fixtures and the crowds but the other 8 that would need to vote for it to make 14 just wouldn’t, two would have to make way so it’s turkeys voting for Christmas.

Agreed. It’s usually a talking point enjoyed by a certain type of pundit to have a pop at all things Scottish.

How does Rooney keep getting work?

His name. Plus he did a good job in difficult circumstances with Derby in his first role. What I respect, as opposed to the Lampard and Gerard types, is that he’s willing to go down the pyramid to learn his trade and not just play solely off his name higher up. This one will likely determine his longer term career.

Can’t beat cup final day. I’ll beat watching the game from behind the sofa more than likely but still got to love the whole occasion!
I'm probably just throwing the game on my laptop and listening to records and cleaning. Couldn't give two shits about the Manchester clubs haha.

That’s fair as an overseas fan you haven’t grown up with it, for a while, being the only domestic televised game, and even after that ended being the biggest occasion that ended the season with a full day build up. It was as big as winning the league in my youth and in terms of prestige and the day maybe bigger. It’s probably lost a bit of its sheen in the last 20 years but I still don’t think I could not get involved in a cup final day.

Yeah the TV laws over there are insane. That being said, like twenty years ago we were lucky to get live games at all. Usually it was a replay at like 11:00 a.m. on a Tuesday of Liverpool v Bolton or something.

It’s actually more that prior to premier league televised football was very sporadic. It had nothing to do with law. Even in the early years of the premier league pay tv was something very few households had, you’d maybe take a trip to the pub for a huge match.

The FA Cup was a constant and had a glamour and sparkle and magic and that one game was a national event in the same way as Wimbledon or the Grand National etc.

A mixture of factors, including crazy FA management has maybe dimmed that a bit but for a fan of English football from Europe, and particularly one who grew up in England, it still is the day in the domestic calendar.

Also I don’t think the tv laws are mad, they protect the pyramid and the pyramid is hugely important, football is not a franchise game with protected leagues, it’s a community game and smaller clubs represent smaller communities and that is worth protecting. Now the price to buy the games that are televised, that is insane.

Yeah but you'd think something like what we have with Peacock would exist over there. There's usually one or two televised games a week and the rest are streaming on Peacock.

The majority of the games are televised it’s the 2.30 to 5.15 Saturday blackout to protect 3pm Saturday fixtures for the lower leagues that’s the issue. That blackout applies to legitimate streaming as much as tv.

Have you guys considered being more FREE and not having colors that run?

Nah lads, you can keep your “freedom”, there are consequences to not being a match going fan and the sport is more important than me being able to watch every Saturday 3pm.

American soccer seasons usually run Spring to Winter, so a lot of folks (like me) support their local MLS or lower side as well as a Euro club. I can walk to my USL side in like 20 mins, and drive down to the local MLS side in a couple hours. Obviously not the same quality as PL, but I still get the game day vibes.

Hoping to get out to London next season to see Spurs disappoint me in person.
