Thought I would share this here.

I had the pleasure of seeing Mike and Kate Westbrook perform their 'The Westbrook Blake' suite last night in St John's Church in Central London. Have to admit that it isn't my favourite of Westbrook's but I couldn't pass down the opportunity to see him play live and it was an incredible setting for it.

During the interval, I chatted with Mike and showed him this record ('The Westbrook Blake') and my test pressing of his 1970 'Love Songs'. He just kind of grunted when he saw the test pressing was 'Love Songs' and when I asked if he could sign one of the records he said "I won't be signing that one" (referring to 'Love Songs') in quite an aggressive way, but happily signed 'The Westbrook Blake'. I had read that he regretted making 'Love Songs' and I assumed it was down to it being a less developed album which ended up being considered one of his better ones, so maybe that was an annoyance. I now wonder if theres something a bit more to it, I certainly didn't expect such a strong of a reaction.

The images all seem to suggest official UMG releases and looking closely at the rear credits there seems some affiliation with jazzecho.de but that site has them for sale but doesn’t mention anything about the mastering.
I’d love Pneuma and would probably replace my Tauhid if they’re decent masters.
EDIT: seeing Marion Brown’s Vista too.

If anybody gets any of these can you let me know the quality? Really interested in Pneuma and Tauhid but want to know how they sound before going for them with US shipping

I wonder if the copy of Tauhid I spotted at my local a couple of days ago. Would make sense. I'll try and have a look after the kiddo's soccer lessons.

I am curious too, but not hopeful.

The obvious:

1. Price is quite low. So, despite pallas pressing, don't expect quality as in the AP series.
2. Master tapes are gone, and even if they were not, they would not be in Europe. Digital all the way, but that's not necessarily a dealbreaker.
3. Don't seem to be gatefolds as originals were.
4. Only Europe - less nutty OCD collectors there, but regardless, if these are top quality they would be getting a much higher profile release, and wider. So that is another sign.

I have an OG of Pneuma, it is an acquired taste. I would love a good Tauhid and Vista though.

Sadly discogs has not better info yet either. What I find so funny is that Verve constantly seems to be half-assing it with their reissues that last 4 years and Blue Note has knocked them out with BN80, Classics and Tone Poets. They are all owned by the same parent group UMG.

These are the two I’ve ordered, I’ll let you know my impressions. I’ve got the Anthology Tauhid to compare to at least. Having spent years struggling to locate a decent Pneuma at a decent price, I figured this will be as good as I can expect without dropping on lucky in the future. I noticed these have ended up on Amazon UK too so they may end up on Amazon US or at least have Amazon import shipping prices which I remember being reasonable.

Confirmed no gatefolds, no mastering credits in the deadwax, appear to be budget reissues. Not looking good.
 
Thought I would share this here.

The London jazz festival has now come to an end and I managed to squeeze in 1 last gig over the weekend when I saw Henry Lowther live at the Vortex. Lowther is a legendary British jazz musician and he was also joined by bassist Dave Green (a key member of Don Rendell / Ian Carr's Quintet amongst others), saxophonist Pete Hurt (another Don Rendell alumni and big band leader), and sit-in's pianist Liam Dunachie and drummer Will Glaser. Absolutely jaw dropping performance from start to finish, blindingly good!

I had the pleasure of chatting with Henry at the end, talking about the gig and stories of past performances. Henry and Pete were kind enough to sign my ticket when I luckily remembered that I had brought along my favourite record of Henry's, "Child Song". I showed it to him nd he was ecstatic, saying he rarely sees a vinyl copy and telling me the story behind the cover photo. He was, again, kind enough to sign it for me which is a real treat!

That concludes my jazz gigs for the London Jazz Festival 2022 and likely the year. Managed to get a few good shows in and some souvenirs along the way.

Really great set by the looks of it.

I bought a Japanese (Toshiba) pressing of Dizzy Reece's Star Bright (and Soundin' Off) and its such a incredibly good session. Great to see that make the list.
