Jazz

Finally landed a clean copy of this one at a somewhat reasonable price. Prices continue to creep up rapidly with this value release getting some attention.

Put it on with the ST cart and I was hearing a little distorted mono playback. (Another example of fake stereo from this era). They cut this reissue from the mono tapes; kind of a nice bonus IMO.

Sounds awesome when you give it a proper mono playback.

I have mentioned the fantastic We Jazz Helsinki jazz magazine series a couple of times in the past (@avecigrec picked up a couple as well I believe) and just thought I would share their upcoming winter edition.

The cover piece is a deepdive into the Black Jazz series, written by Daniel Spicer. His 'Lost In The Vaults' is a book that I read earlier this year and really enjoyed it (its essentially a page per record of obscure or lesser known jazz) so it should be a good read.

Popped over to Sounds Of The Universe in my lunch break and picked this up. Looks decent again from my initial thumb through.

The price has gone up though. I seem to remember they were initially £14 each (still not cheap for a magazine, despite the high quality) and this one set me back £18. Almost hard to justify really as I wouldn't usually spend that on a proper book which would take longer to read!

Any of the We Jazz albums you would recommend in particular? I haven't had the chance to dig into that label. I was really tempted to pick some up blind while I was in Helsinki on a layover as they were everywhere but I realized HHV also stocks them and thought I would come back and stream some first.

I've got Mopo, and Koma Saxo-Live. Worth streaming them though. Lots I liked a fair bit but just those two that I pulled the trigger on...

Ashamed to say that I haven't really delved into the record label.

I listened to Linda Fredriksson's 'Juniper' (Bandcamp Link) after seeing it advertised in the last magazine they released and enjoyed the instrumentals.

Im going to have to look into the ones that @Poly-Rythmo mentioned though!

I would have bought that too if it had been released when I was in Helsinki last year. It's on the list for my next trip. (She's in Mopo, which has a more upbeat sound than Juniper from memory).

I came across this interview when looking for recommendations. Nice read - You might enjoy it - the ones @Poly-Rythmo mentioned are on there. I'm enjoying that Mopo album.

This should be cool!

Their site is still migrating so might be funky but don’t see that this is technically limited to a small amount.

I don't know if it has been shared yet but there are three new Sam Records on the agenda :

Donald Byrd & Bobby Jaspar – Paris ’58 > mid-february
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers – Olympia Concert – Fontana – 1958 (now in stock)
Barney Wilen – Un Temoin dans la Ville – OST – Fontana – 1959 (now in stock)

The Art Blakey and Donald Byrd must be brand new additions because i checked the site earlier this week and they weren't there.

I got Barney Wilen a couple days before xmas.

I did the exact same! I had the Wilen in my bag but noticed it was a 10" and held off (nothing against them but its quite a bit of money for a 10", especially with shipping as well). Definitely going to get these but trying to work out if its any cheaper to wait for a few copies to make it to UK shops.
