July 2020 Record Challenge (The Raffle Strikes Back)

Day 4: Declare independence

Bob Dylan - Bringing It All Back Home

Dylan going electric with this album and later that summer at Newport was probably one of the most revolutionary moments in 20th century popular music. I debated going with Highway 61 Revisited for this, due to the "that snare shot that sounded like somebody’d kicked open the door to your mind", in the words of Bruce Springsteen, but this coming first and the visceral reaction it provoked probably trumps it for this challenge.

I also stumbled upon this video on YouTube yesterday. Jason Isbell starts by talking about Dylan's Newport performance and how if it hadn't happened, everything afterward would have been different, since no one of less than Bob's stature could blow open the doors in that way and no one close to Bob's stature has come since. And then they show him the guitar he did it with, which he apparently left on the plane after the show and the pilot held on to for decades. So cool.

This evolution also ultimately led to the best concert review ever: "Bob Dylan was a bastard in the second half."

July 4: Declare Independence

Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly

The conversation piece between Kendrick and 2Pac gets more horrifyingly relevant by the day. We are in the middle of a revolution in the midst of centuries of civil unrest.

"The ground is gonna open up and swallow the evil...the ground is a symbol for the poor people and the poor people are gonna open up this whole world and swallow the rich people...might be some cannibalism out this muhfucka, they might eat the rich, know what I'm sayin'?"

Day 5 - Divisive

Even the sticker says this one is controversial. One of his best in my eyes. A jazz concept Jehovah’s Witness Soul odyssey, with slowed down voices and deep grooves. Hell yes!

The Rainbow Children - Prince. And no apologies for doing his royal badness two days in a row.

This album was my white whale for the past 3 or 4 years, I had it on cd though. Hold firm brothers and sisters. The good will come to you.

DAY 5
DIFFERENT STROKES
Weezer - Pacific Daydream
I once saw someone call Weezer "the best band with the worst discography" and it's hard to argue with that. They have several albums that have been met with mixed to negative feedback from both critics and fans and Pacific Daydream was reviled by almost everyone back when it came out, and listening to it, it's easy to hear why. It's probably the most poppy and sanitized music the band has put out. But... I can't help it, I like this album, and I like it quite a bit. Some of it probably has to do with when it came out; late 2017 and early 2018 is a period I look back with mixed feelings, sometimes fondly, sometimes with regret. But when I think of the soundtracks to the "good times" of that period, this album tends to crop up. So it's hard for me to hate it, and when it comes to Weezer, I often end up throwing my critical faculties out the window anyway. I'm a sucker for a good hook and big pop choruses, and Rivers Cuomo's awkward and unusual lyrics wrap it up in an odd bow that makes me return to it, despite it's very obvious flaws.

JULY 5
DIFFERENT STROKES
A widely disliked or divisive album that you personally love

Morrissey "Low in high school. Edition extreme de luxe"

To begin with, Morrissey has become a very problematic and disliked artist in recent years due to having said a lot of very controversial, racist and stupid things to which I don't agree. Still I like his music and songs, both Smiths and solo works. It's a classic case of seperating art from the artist.

Apart from this, even among Morrissey fans many dislike this album. I think it still has many great songs on it such as "Home is a question mark", "I wish you lonely", "Bury the living", "Never again will I be a twin" or his Pretenders cover "Back on the chain gang".

Day 5: Divisive

I've wanted to play this record for a while...but never really thought it was a good time.

I like it, but the shit this band does and says is a bit much. I got this sometime before the controversial Tweets and haven't played it since.

Whirr ‎– Sway
Graveface Records ‎– GRAVE118, 2015

Cut at Lucky Lacquers
Pressed at Rainbo

Graveface Records "dropped" Whirr when it all happened...and I subscribe to his other label - Terror Vision...and they still put a bunch of random crap in the box.

I suppose for me the reason that this was my breaking point with Morrissey is that this was the point when he went from making problematic statements and good music to outright supporting far right groups and his shitty views bleeding into the music with that awful “stop watching the news” song. Like you I can still separate the smiths and his earlier stuff but from here on out he’s dead to me.

Day 5 - DIFFERENT STROKES

Jack Johnson ‎– In Between Dreams (Brushfire Records, 2005 First Pressing)

This is a funny one because it did really well in the charts (No.1 in many countries including the UK, Australia, and New Zealand) but averaged poor reviews by critics (54 on metacritic) and often gets scoffed at when brought up in conversation. I personally find it to be a great relaxing album. Songs like 'Better Together' and 'Banana Pancakes' are just beautifully written imo.
