July 2021 Vinyl Spin Challenge: Summer Breeze Makes Me Feel Fine

July 4 - I’m so Bored with the U.S.A.
Play a record by a non-USian artist.

IVAR BJORNSON & EINAR SELVIK -- Skuggsja (A Piece for Mind & Mirror)

Figured you can't get much more non-USA than an album commissioned by the Norwegian government to celebrate 200 years of the Norwegian Constitution. Its also just a really cool album.

July 5 - Interconnected day 1
Over the next 3 days play records that are connected somehow (don’t be lazy and play 3 albums by the same band, unless it was part of a trilogy)

Pauline Murray & The Invisible Girls -- S/T

Why not go with albums/artists that have a connection to Manchester? This one just happened to be produced by the legendary Martin Hannett. This album listens like a predecessor to the type of dream pop later popularized by bands like Cocteau Twins.

I first heard Dream Sequence in the early 80's on Brave New Waves on the CBC. The DJ was talking about the album and Martin Hannett and his work with Joy Division. I went out to buy this record but couldn't find it. I did find Closer and bought it instead.

Dream Sequence is great. They remastered this Pauline Murray album a few years ago but I had already tracked down a copy of the OG pressing when I found out about the remaster. I've thought about upgrading but my copy sounds pretty good and the remaster is like $30-$40 USD since its an import.

Rufus feat. Chaka Kahn - Rags to Rufus

I'll explain the connection on Day 3 (I love this prompt by the way!)

July 6 - Interconnected day 2

Parliament - Mothership Connection

(Explanation on Day 3)

Western artists with albums covers that use east Asian characters (in their western edition release).

DAY 2: Beck "Hyperspace" (2019 Capitol)

The Gerbils - Are You Sleepy?

Scott Spillane is one of my all time favorite musicians. I've gotten to see him six times live, but never as The Gerbils. In a better world they'd get back together and do another album and tour. I'd settle for another tour of Andrew, Scott, and Laura just to hear their cover of St. Thomas's Strangers Out of Blue. When I started collecting vinyl again a couple years ago this was one of the first albums I looked for.

July 6 - Interconnected day 2

A couple 7" records for today's spin. These are by Calvin Don't Jump! The top one is more specifically interconnected and features the songs Rusty Gondola and the Bleating. Decided to keep it going with the second one which has the songs Crumble and Solamente la Luna esta Noche.

July 6 - Interconnected Part 2

I played Janis Joplin yesterday and today…let’s choose one of her opening acts. Per Wiki

Of the gig with Big Brother, Tillery and the Loading Zone won over Joplin's fans so much that Joplin told others after the show that Tillery was never allowed again to be on the same bill with her.

Man…never cross Janis huh?

Either way, Linda Tillery is a boss too. This one isn't really like the Loading Zone output which was psych and R&b heavy, it's more Carole Kingish with a funkier and discoish tinge. Very cool 70s gem.

Linda Tillery - Linda Tillery
