June 2019 Vinyl Challenge

Day 25 - Randomizer
Pick someone else's post from earlier this month, then play a record related to that record or the person who posted it

Day 1 - Who Are You

I love many genres but if there's feedback and fuzz pedals involved I'm in. The Jesus And Mary Chain are one of my most reliable dealers.

This was my first JaMC record, it's not their best one but it's still pretty solid.
Super stoked to see them this Thursday!

My copy of Rain Dogs has a skip at the end of the title track, so I could really use a reissue as well. And Bone Machine too of course.

So for now I'll play a Waits record that I do have a reissue of....

Tom Waits - Closing Time
This could have qualified for my Day 13 topic too. I am one of the lucky ones that has a great sounding copy.

Catch Up- Day 25 Inspired by @Lee Newman: Numero Group’s Eccentric Soul- Sitting in the Park

I agree that the true treasure trove among the glut of reissues are among old soul albums. Numero Group’s Eccentric Soul series is a great example of that. This stuff should have been popular and household names, but for whatever reason, it didn’t take. @Lee Newman is a champion of labels like Daptone & Colemine, so he gets the tip of the cap here.

Day 1 - Who Are You?
Welcome to the June challenge! Play a record from your go-to genre

Iron & Wine - The Shepherd's Dog

I listen to a lot of indie rock and folk music, usually guitar-based and with a preference for great lyrics. Iron & Wine is my favourite artist and on this album especially hits the sweet spot of great classic Americana and really interesting arrangements and instrumentation. Quite possibly my favourite album of all time.

Iron and wine is awesome, I enjoy indie and I like folk so this seemed like the perfect person to follow. I also love this album by Devendra and was a great excuse to spin it

Day 26: Outlier

Ayalew Mesfin and the Black Lion Band - Hasabe - My Worries

I have a lot of records in my collection I could consider ‘outliers’ (most, if not all, of which came from u-no-who), but to me, this one stands out as a) I don’t listen to a lot of African music, and b) it’s the only record in my collection that’s entirely in a different language.

Day 26- Outlier: Solar Power- New Sounds in Seattle Hip Hop

I have no problem with rap music, especially old school stuff. I don’t listen very often due to the misogyny & profanity not being something I want to play for my daughters. This is a cool collection of local stuff. We have a burgeoning hip hop scene in the PNW and this is a great cross section of young, on the rise artists.

Day 23 - I Love You Unconditionally

Television - Marquee Moon
(4 Men with Beards copy)

I started collecting in 2005 and this was one of the first records I bought, so it has sentimental value. I remember finding it at the record store and being super excited - even in 05, originals were hard to find and pricey. I had no idea what 4MWB was.

The mastering here isn’t too bad. There’s definitely some sibilant distortion on the vocals in places, though. The vinyl itself looks a little like the surface of the (marquee?) moon - I understand that was pretty typical of a Rainbo pressing of this era.

It is almost an indescribable feeling when I flip a sleeve over to see the 4MWB logo at the bottom of a record that has needed to be in my collection for a long time. Gutted and utter disappointment when that happens - it almost makes me what to stop looking in the bins.

Before the recently released proper reissues, the early Wire albums were what got me. I think I got one when I forgot to look at the back - but never again. Nothing from 4MWB will ever be in my house.

Day 23: Unconditional Love

For something that I never thought I'd ever own an original pressing of, this is one that I can't complain for being less than "sonically" perfect. There's static throughout and a couple scratches that cause tics - but for being 4 bucks it is still perfectly listenable to me...I think being mono helps it out the most. For the price this record goes for, I can't complain at all. It's not something I could flip for the hundreds it can fetch, but still seems that 4 bucks was the score of a lifetime.
