June 2020 Record Challenge Thread (The RAFFLE continues!)

Friday (12) – Cocaine – play something fast and short

Arctic Monkeys "Whatever people say I am, That's what I'm not"

One of the most amazing debut albums for me. 💜 The songs have an incredible drive and power, most of them are very fast. I've seen them at their early gigs in 2006 in Berlin and Salzburg and there was such a strong energy, also in the crowd. 4 songs in I was bathed in sweat haha. 😅💦

Day 11 - Hype up a bassist or keyboardist that doesn’t get enough credit

Jutta Hipp - At The Hickory House Volume 1 (Blue Note, 1956 First Mono Pressing)

I decided to bring the big guns today. While many jazz fans will be familiar with this incredible and rare recording by the pianist Jutta Hipp, they might not be aware of who the bassist is. Introduced at the beginning, "with the help of a bass man from England", Peter Ind plays fantastically on this album, never attempting to take away from Jutta but instead providing a constant and melodic bass. Ind worked with other musicians in the US, mainly Lee Konitz, and later returned to England to set up his own label, Wave. He also worked as in sound engineering for the labels Atlantic, Verve, Bethlehem, and Warwick. At 91 years of age he is still active (he played a live performance in London for his 90th birthday) playing music, painting and writing books. Most recently, he has entered the social media world by setting up an Instagram account and a Youtube channel which includes a fantastic 1hour 24min documentary. Please check his music out and give his accounts a follow (he only has 52 subscribers on Youtube but I bet we could add to that easily as a group!!), I bet it would mean a lot to him.

Day 12 - Cocaine – play something fast and short

slowthai - Nothing Great About Britain (Method Records, 2019 VMP R&HH pressing

I wasn't actually that excited for this release when it was announced as the R&HH ROTM, but its one that I have played most out of the series. It's super raw, energetic, political, and fast! Great stuff.

Wednesday (10) – Puberty – gosh parents, your music sucks, did you rebel? Play an album that takes you back to those teenage years.

mewithoutYou - [A-->B] Life

Never had much of a rebellious streak. The loud music I listened to as a teenager were mostly on a christian label. Three years ago I saw them tour on the 15th anniversary of this album, their first, and next year they'll be calling it quits.

Day 11 - Unappreciated Bassist

Ramones - Ramones

So, I’m playing this album for all the punk rock bassists. Thee of little renown. Especially, Matt Freeman of Rancid. The bassist that made me start paying attention to bass lines back in my teenage years. He’s insanely good and is never talked about with the Entwistles and Geddys of the world. I played a Rancid album last month, though, and didn’t want to repeat. I feel like Mike Dirnt of Green Day might be the only bassist that gets the respect he deserves in the greater fandom of music.

Now, I don’t think Dee Dee Ramone is one of the greatest ever, but I chose this album because it’s a key example of how important the bass is to Punk music. Most of the songs that make me bob my head on this album? That’s the bassline I’m nodding to. Do the guitar and bass echo each other? Sure they do, but I hear the bass when I hum the tune in my head, not the guitar.

Also, I don’t know shit about individual musicians in most bands, so I’m pulling from a pool of about 30 musician names I remember from my youth. Haha. So, there’s that.

Day 12 - Fast and short
Tierra Whack - Whack World

This album is 15 one-minute songs, for a total of, you got it, 15 min on the dot. Songs end just as they’re taking off, some cut off mid bar. Jarring for some, but years of listening to GBV have prepared me 😀

The album fits on one side of a 10 inch, so the full album is pressed on both sides.

Thursday (11) – Hype up a bassist or keyboardist that doesn’t get enough credit

Buddy Guy - Left My Blues In San Francisco

Jack Myers

Chicago blues only works for me when there's a prominent rhythm section. Jack Myers is only on one track on this album (maybe more, credits are iffy) but he was part of Junior Wells' Chicago Blues Band.
