Let's See What Makes Your Vinyl Spin!

This popped up on me socials. If I had a dedicated room to allow this kind of build, I’d 💯 do this.

Just a question about a set up like this. Would it affect the sound quality of your speakers to have them enclosed in a shelf like this?

I find the look really clean but I've hesitated because I'm concerned that the speakers like this might cause them to sound very "boomy".

It certainly could cause issues, especially if they’re rear-ported for some reason. I feel like you also generally want them at ear level.

It is interesting that someone with such an interest in vinyl and with so many records that they built a fully custom integrated vinyl storage solution didn’t stop to think at all about the speaker acoustics lmao.

It’s almost something someone would do if they suddenly came into a bunch of money and didn’t know what to do with an extra room in their house so they said “fuck it, record players are trending so I want a vinyl room!”

I think there’s also the fact that some people are just really interested in music and not so much maximising audiophile performance. If they’re nice components and the speakers are front ported I bet that still sounds good, just probably not the maximised performance that an audiophile is into. Everyone is into this for their own reasons, could just be someone who loves listening to tunes with friends and family, rather than doing the whole focusing on micro detail, and the space being nice is equally important.

So you guys would discourage building something like this to house speakers in right (I have Wharfedale Denton's)

I do have an entire wall and would love a floor to ceiling type shelf. We work with a pretty cool carpenter and we were already brainstorming a similar idea but I was hesitant because of enclosing the speakers..

Basically it would be some sort of shelving system I could build up and the carpenter would come over and put in the extra supports and pieces that would make it look like a "built in" / single shelving unit.

I don't really want to have the speakers on stands since that's not kid friendly. Currently they sit on the upper part of a 2x4 kallax. I like that height as well. (I should probably post my current room set up to give an idea but still working on a few things to tidy up).

If we’re talking solely on sound them being rear ported they could get a bit boomy and putting them in box like that could distort the sound as the first reflection is going to bounce off the edges of the boxing rather than side and rear walls. Also it’s going to be a bit high for tweeters being at ear level. But from an aesthetic and storage point of view I get it and I suppose you kinda have to weigh up where the ultimate priorities lie.

Edit: Equally with it being a custom built in unit you could have the speaker enclosure at a much lower height that in the picture and, as @kvetcha says below, with the front level to the edge, it might not be bad with front ported speakers. I still think rear ported ones like dentons could be a bit boomy.

If you're dealing with a front-ported speaker and the cabinet is built to fit the enclosure neatly, with the front of the speaker flush with the lip of the shelf, it should not be an issue.

This I what Sonos is for…

It can be. But then that’s also expensive new and there a lot of people with bits of gear that like physical media but are more focused on tunes than sound. Once you’re not using gear that wrecks your vinyl there is no right or wrong or one size fits all approach.

I mean that’s a different thought altogether though. If you had another room for the dentons and a more traditional audiophile set up, you could do BluOS or whatever the marantz ecosystem is and use a nice front or non ported bookshelf in a more roomy and formal listening space.

I don’t disagree with you, but if you’ve got cash for a record collection that requires a cus built storage I thinking a Sonos type system ain’t going to dent your wallet.

Also, I’m a Sonos fan. It’s what we have in the main living area of the house. Easy for the wife, kids, visitors to use and it fills the space nicely with music. The Trueplay tuning works well.

Or if you were actually going Sonos you put plugs in the speaker cubby and have a stereo pair 3 or 5 in them and a port off the phono stage to transmit to the them. It isn’t a cheap option though by any stretch of the imagination.
