Apologies to @Yer Ol' Uncle D for co-opting the name of his excellent tapers thread, but this was the title that coming back to me.

A few weeks ago I found a stack of ticket stubs that got me thinking about shows I've seen, and thought I'd turn that into the monthly challenge.

General rules apply - try to not play a duplicate of what someone else has played for that day, and try to fit the prompt, but if you can't feel free to take liberties!

Since this month celebrates live music, I'll give away a shirt from one of my favorite venues, The Casbah, at random to someone who participates in this thread. Fake bonus points if you can throw some memories, pics, or ticket stubs into your responses.

Ok, off we go down memory lane:

Day 1: The Jacksons Victory Tour, December 1984 at Dodger Stadium. First concert that I saw, besides saying I saw the Jackson 5 the main memory I have is the waves of bass across the field. Oddly enough I ended up reading fan mail for Michael Jackson as a summer job a few summers later. Play something by the first person you saw in concert, or the first album/musical memory you have.

Day 2: Chicago, November 1986 at Universal Amphitheater. This was during the very smooth Peter Cetera era Chicago, really went at my high school girlfriends behest. Play something from an artist whose sound has changed over time or that you'd take a date to.

Day 3: The Samples, early 1990s at The Barn UC Riverside – Booked them to play the bar I worked at, my now-wife and I had so much fun that we followed them to Vegas the next day. They were big for a bit, and flamed out into varying resurrected iterations. Play an album from a band that has faded into obscurity.

Day 4: Prairie Home Companion November 1997, Fitzgerald Theater – Went to two Prairie Home Companion tapings when I lived in Minneapolis. This one featured the Nashville Bluegrass Band which featured Peter Rowan (who was in Old & In The Way with Jerry Garcia), and can be listened to here: March 22, 1997 broadcast with Kate MacKenzie, Peter Rowan, and the Nashville Bluegrass Band | A Prairie Home Companion. Play some Bluegrass / folk or something that features spoken word.

IMG_4131.jpeg

Day 5: Social Distortion February 2001, 4th and B – This was the first time I saw Social Distortion after the death of founding member Dennis Dannell from a brain aneurysm at the way too young age of 38. Play something from a band with shifting lineups or that continued on after a founding members death.

IMG_4132.jpeg

Day 6: Rolling Stones February 2003, Staples Center – I’ve seen the Stones 2x, both for free. The first time was at the LA Coliseum when I worked security and got to stand right by the stage, and the second was this benefit for the NRDC, and was the first free show they played since Altamont. Groups like the NRDC are more important than ever, spin something by an artist that promotes or has played for charitable reasons.

IMG_4135.jpeg

Day 7: Bruce Hornsby & The Noisemakers October 2019, The Magnolia – Bruce was touring for Absolute Zero, which featured Justin Vernon. Bruce was super grumpy with the folks that were calling out for Grateful Dead tunes, said he wasn’t going to play any and also stated that he thought that nobody in the audience even knew who Bon Iver was. Play something by someone who made an unexpected collaboration.

IMG_4134.jpeg

Day 8: P!nk / Brandi Carlile October 2023, Snapdragon Stadium – P!nk (like Brandi) really connects with her audience and puts on quite a theatrical show, flying around the arena at the end of the show. Play something over the top.

Day 9: The Cure May 2023, North Island Amphitheater – They kept it real on the last tour, keeping prices down for both tickets and merch, and putting on a spectacular set. Play something by a band that has kept the fans in mind.

Day 10: Simon & Garfunkel November 2023, Cox Arena – A wholly unexpected reunion tour that was fantastic. Play something by a band that has disbanded, bonus points if they did a reunion tour.

Day 11: Steely Dan May 2022, North Island Amphitheater – This was not a good concert, definitely felt like Donald Fagen was phoning it in. Glad to say I saw them (even if it was post-Walter Becker) is about the best I can say about this show. Play something by an artist who had a release that disappointed you, or that was disappointing in concert.

Day 12: The Strokes October 2019, Ohana Festival – This was probably the only time I felt like the crowd was out of control at a show. The rush of people to the stage when the Strokes hit the stage was like a wave, honestly a pretty scary feeling. Play something by an artist with rabid fans.

Day 13: Tash Sultana October 2019, Ohana Festival – As opposed to The Strokes, Tash played a mellow yet spectacular sunset set. Just her looping various instruments creating a great collage. Was wholly unfamiliar with her before, but have made it a point to see her every time since. Play something by a solo artist.

Day 14: Oingo Boingo December 1986, Hollywood Palladium – One of my favorite memories of my late friend Jim was seeing Oingo Boingo with him and jumping around in the pit. Play something for a friend.

Day 15: Flight To Mars May 2012, The Casbah – Flight To Mars was a UFO cover band formed by Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, and raised money every year for Chron's & Colitis foundation. 2012 was the one year they did a small tour, and it was great to see Mike in a small (250 person) room. Best part of the night was when Ace Frehley popped up on stage for Black Diamond. Play something with a guest star.

Day 16: Drive~By Truckers May 2010, House of Blues – I’ve seen the DBT many times over the years, and more often than not they close out with Let There Be Rock, which name checks bands that Patterson Hood saw, or didn’t see, and includes this refrain at the end:

So I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd
But I sure saw Ozzy Osbourne with Randy Rhoads in 82
Right before that plane crash.
And I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd but I sure saw AC/DC
With Bon Scott singing, "Let There Be Rock Tour".

Play something by an artist you wish you could have seen.

IMG_4139.jpeg

Day 17: The Pogues October 2009, House of Blues – Happy Saint Patricks Day! Shane MacGowan wrote amazing lyrics, and had a voice that brought them to life. Play an artist who speaks to you with their lyrics or delivery.

IMG_4140.jpeg

Day 18: Madness / Fishbone / Pandoras May 1986, Hollywood Palladium – Don’t remember a whole lot of this night, other than there was a lot of energy and dancing. Play some Reggae / Ska or something worthy of a Party At Ground Zero.

Day 19: Flying Lotus / Brandon Coleman / Salami Rose Joe Lewis September 2019, House of Blues – This was a Flying Lotus 3D show where they gave out 3D glasses, which worked great with the visualizations and music he had setup for the show. Play something with an electronic or futuristic edge.

Day 20: L.A.M.F. / Jessie Malin December 2017, Belly Up Tavern – This was a celebration of the Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers album of the same name, with the lineup being Walter Lure (Heartbreakers), Mike Ness (Social Distortion), Clem Burke (Blondie), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols). Play a ‘supergroup’ or an artist that’s also been part of a larger group.

Day 21: Yngwie Malmsteen May 2019, House of Blues– Went with a friend who wanted to see some shredding. Fully enjoyed the experience. Play something with a shredding guitar solo.

IMG_4143.jpeg

Day 22: Grateful Dead December 1989, Great Western Forum – Hearing the Dead bust out Help On The Way --> Slipknot! --> Franklin’s Tower to start the second set was a surprise in the best possible way. Play a rarity, or something that would blow you away if you heard it live.

Day 23: Björk / Interpol / Jesus & Mary Chain / Arctic Monkeys / Gillian Welch & David Rawlings / Noisettes April 2007, Coachella – Went primarily for Björk and the first Jesus & Mary Chain show in 6 years. This was back when Coachella sold one day passes. Saw a fantastic variety of bands that day. Play someone you saw at a festival, or someone who you would have headline your dream festival.

Day 24: The Beat Farmers November 1990, The Barn at UC Riverside - The Beat Farmers were led by the late, great Country Dick Montana who died onstage in 1995. One of the best bar bands I’ve seen. Play something by someone who leaves it all on stage.

Day 25: Steve Burns / Starlight Mints July 2004, The Casbah – Steve Burns (of Blues Clues fame) released an excellent album with Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips called Songs For Dustmites, and did a short tour with it. Was a little odd to see him sitting at the bar nursing a beer before the show to be honest. Lots of musicians have been on kids shows from Sesame Street to Yo Gabba Gabba, play something by someone that has appeared on a kids tv show.

Day 26: Pearl Jam / Sonic Youth July 2006, Viejas Arena – This particular show was memorable for a number of reasons, getting Sonic Youth as an opener was a big one. PJ played the Mother Love Bone track Crown Of Thorns and the rarely played Satan’s Bed, but the high point for me was the dedication of Long Road to Ed’s late teacher Clayton Liggett, and how hearing of his passing inspired the song. Play something for a teacher or person that has inspired you.

Day 27: Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Youssou N’Dour September 1988, LA Coliseum – This stop of the Amnesty International Human Rights Now! Tour also featured Bono & The Edge, and Joan Baez, and was meant to raise awareness of Amensty Internationals work. Play something by an artist that has stood up for people who struggle to find a voice themselves.

Day 28: Neil Young / Death Cab For Cutie / Everest October 2008, Cox Arena – Neil played a number of extended cuts this show – Love and Only Love, Cortez the Killer, Cowgirl in the Sand, and closed with a blistering cover of the Beatles A Day in the Life. At the end I think there were only 2 strings left unbroken on Old Black. Play a cover song.

IMG_4141.jpeg

Day 29: Fiona Apple September 2017, Ohana Festival – Was a surprise to see Fiona on the lineup at all, and she really hasn’t done many shows since then. Play something by an artist who focuses more on music than touring.

Day 30: Liam Gallagher / Mary Wallopers, July 2024, Thomond Park Ireland – Liams show happened to coincide with an already planned trip to Ireland, the tour was focused on the 30th anniversary of Definitely Maybe. Play an album you’d love to hear played in full.

Day 31: Fare Thee Well, June 2015, Levi’s Stadium – This set of shows in Santa Clara and Chicago was last time the “Core Four” of the Grateful dead played together. As we bid goodbye to March and this challenge, play something that references a goodbye or farewell.

Placeholder in case the audience demands one more song.

In the meantime, here's a somewhat accurate representation of shows i've attended. If you have one or a concert chronology, post in the thread and I'll stick it in here.

Day 1: The Jacksons Victory Tour, December 1984 at Dodger Stadium. Play something by the first person you saw in concert

My first show was this Elton John gig right here...

No ticket stub and this was way before my taping days, so you'll have to settle for the program I bought at the show 49 years ago...

Day 1: The Jacksons Victory Tour, December 1984 at Dodger Stadium. 1st concert

Counting Crows - 1994

Fun month. I'm going to try to play by spinning a live record each day if I can (not totally sure I'll be able to manage a new artist each day but let's see).

My first gig was Counting Crows in November 1994 with Cracker providing decent support. Haven't got anything livw from them on vinyl (Across A Wire would be great to have) but this is a decent CD bootleg from Boston 1994 with a v similar setlist.

I have to go digital today as I don't have vinyl by any of the 3 bands that played my first concert: a 1997 co-headlining show with No Doubt & Weezer, with Ednaswap (whose song "Torn" would be inescapable when sung by Natalie Imbruglia a few years later) as the opener at Vancouver's Pacific Coliseum.

Beck - Odelay

My first Concert was in the Spring of my Freshman year of high school my friends mom took a van load of us to see Red Red Meat and Atari Teenage Riot open for Beck at Illinois State University. It was a phenomenal show and we all had a blast.

The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

I'm not sure the first concert as my parents used to go see country bands and some pop bands at the fair and I'd go with them. But I do remember having a turntable in the garage and The Beach Boys getting played a lot when I was real young. Probably some Carpenters too.

I'm going to try and add a concert ticket for each artist/prompt this month if I can pull it off. IMG_3492.jpegIMG_3491.jpegIMG_3493.jpegIMG_3496.jpegIMG_3495.jpeg

Toad The Wet Sprocket - Dulcinea
Western Washington State Fair on 9/12/95

My first show when I was 13. My friend’s grandpa was the president of the Fair and gave us concert tickets to a bunch of shows those years. Our parents would just drop us off and we felt like adults on our own. Green Apple Quickstep and Love Battery opened for this one.

Found this recording of this show here, pretty cool:

Trans-Canada Highwaymen "Explosive Hits Vol. 1" (2023 Pheromone Recordings)
So my first live show was this Canadian band Glass Tiger, who passed through this small town I lived in as a teenager. I don't have any of their records. One of the next shows I saw was the Barenaked Ladies. I don't have any records by them either, but I have this little gem of a covers record, by this supergroup that includes Steven Page.

Day 2: Chicago, November 1986 at Universal Amphitheater. Artist who changed / take a date to.

Jeff Buckley - Live at Sin-é

I was going to play Miles Davis today as an artist who most definitely changes. But he'll have to wait. Because on going through my music paraphernalia file I see that the second concert I ever went to see was by Jeff Buckley - and it was exactly 30 years ago today. So that seems like fate. Concert was great, even though, a little disturbingly for today's prompt, I was with my Mum. She didn't care much for his punk/hard tunes (he played Eternal Life, Kick Out The Jams pretty damn aggressively) but the rest was amazing. It was snowing pretty badly (there was an epic snowball fight afterwards with fans of Beastie Boys, who were playing next door) and given his death the night has become imbued with some kind of magical feeling for me. I'd definitely have taken a date to see him. Listening to live at Sin-é instead, which for me is the perfect encapsulation of Jeff Buckley, with all his talent, love of song, random choices, lack of focus, great guitar playing, gorgeous voice. Can't believe I got to see him - and for £6!

Don't have any Jackson 5, so I'll go with Michael (sorry Tito, Jermaine, Marlon, Jackie, but we know who the real draw was for this show!)

You'll see the Barn at UC Riverside mentioned a few times this month. I worked there all through college as security, bartender, and eventually started booking bands there. Great couple of years.

No Doubt played a lot of opening gigs at shows at the Barn in their early days. I don't see any videos of when they played the Barn, but Spanky's was just up the road:
