March 2025 Challenge Thread - Live Music (Really) Is Better!

Day 2: Chicago, November 1986 at Universal Amphitheater. This was during the very smooth Peter Cetera era Chicago, really went at my high school girlfriends behest. Play something from an artist whose sound has changed over time or that you'd take a date to.

Well, as it turns out I only have schmaltzy Chicago in my collection, appropriately enough. Pure smooth 80's from the vocals to the bass tone.

Day 1: The Jacksons Victory Tour, December 1984 at Dodger Stadium. First concert that I saw, besides saying I saw the Jackson 5 the main memory I have is the waves of bass across the field. Oddly enough I ended up reading fan mail for Michael Jackson as a summer job a few summers later. Play something by the first person you saw in concert, or the first album/musical memory you have.

This was my first.
The Firm at Joe Louis Arena.
I was already 15, my parents didn't let me go to concerts, but I had to see Jimmy Page so I just lied about my whereabouts and went. Somehow I've managed to keep the stub and my original copy of it. That also broke the seal on lying to my parents and everything changed...but I digress.

Ya know, there are some good moments on this record. The lyrics are mostly shit, but the arrangements are slick (especially the opener - Closer) and of the era for sure. All solid players of course. (oof, it gets bad too)

Thanks for putting together March @imtheocean - I'm loving it already, it gave me a reason to find my old stubs. They were in like the 5th box I checked, not bad.

Yep, I went to a show in that era too. Probably the same tour based on the dates.

The venue of my first concert.

k.d. lang – Hymns Of The 49th Parallel

Twangy country star, crooner, chanteuse and, thanks to a remix album, house and techno vocalist. k.d. lang is a national treasure. And of I got anchance to see her I'd absolutely take my wife on a date.

Day 8: No Jazz Sunday
Play me anything but jazz!

I'm kind of cheating on this one since she is "jazz" inspired, but I couldn't help it because I found this signed photo she gave me when I was a kid. This was the first concert my mom took me to with her friends. And Basia gave me a kiss on the cheek when I gave her a flower. I think I was 8?

Goldfinger - Hang-Ups

I didn't go to any concerts until my senior year of high school, when a certain someone was finally arrested and had a restraining order (long story), meaning I finally had as much freedom as a Mormon teen was going to get. I think Goldfinger and Reel Big Fish was my first show.

My wife has been my date for the last 44 years. She and I love this band. So glad we got to see them in an intimate venue. Here's a song from my recording of that show. Live music is better...

Morphine - Live At The Warfield 1997

Day 3: The Samples, early 1990s at The Barn UC Riverside. Band that faded into obscurity

Hootie and the Blowfish - Live at Nick's Fat City, 1995

I guess I can't claim they faded into total obscurity, but relative to their 1995 levels I think it fits the bill. Anyway, they were my 3rd ever concert so it fits the bill too. Bonus of seeing their first UK TV show performance too. Hearing them now is like a comfort blanket to me - a safe slipping back to my teenage years (although quality of this official live album is pretty poor - I've definitely got better bootlegs)...
