March 2025 Challenge Thread - Live Music (Really) Is Better!

Day 26: Pearl Jam / Sonic Youth July 2006, Viejas Arena – This particular show was memorable for a number of reasons, getting Sonic Youth as an opener was a big one. PJ played the Mother Love Bone track Crown Of Thorns and the rarely played Satan’s Bed, but the high point for me was the dedication of Long Road to Ed’s late teacher Clayton Liggett, and how hearing of his passing inspired the song. Play something for a person that has inspired you.

Rather than a teacher I'll go with a former bandmate. A few years older than me, this guitar player formed a band when he got back into town in the early 90s, which I joined as the drummer.
I admired his songwriting and lyrics. Until that point I had really only written poems, but just beginning to form songs from my writing. His main advice back then was just to practice. Write a bunch of songs, then a bunch more.
Anyway, he and I saw a lot of Phish shows together in the 90s which also inspired our band quite a bit.

Day 27: Bruce Springsteen & The E-Street Band, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Youssou N’Dour September 1988, LA Coliseum – This stop of the Amnesty International Human Rights Now! Tour also featured Bono & The Edge, and Joan Baez, and was meant to raise awareness of Amensty Internationals work. Play something by an artist that has stood up for people who struggle to find a voice themselves.

I'll go with Red Hot + Blue - A Tribute to Cole Porter.
This release raised money for ACT UP

The reason I know (and am so fond of) this release is because my mom had the CD. Byrne's Don't Fence Me In was kind of her anthem towards the end of her life. Seeing as this week marked 25 years since she passed (fuck cancer) I knew I'd work this one in.

For the concert connection; a band I was in at the time covered this version (at my request) for a cancer benefit gig.
We did a pretty fun version of a version, and it ended up staying in our set for quite a few shows.

Day 28: Neil Young / Death Cab For Cutie / Everest October 2008, Cox Arena – Neil played a number of extended cuts this show – Love and Only Love, Cortez the Killer, Cowgirl in the Sand, and closed with a blistering cover of the Beatles A Day in the Life. At the end I think there were only 2 strings left unbroken on Old Black. Play a cover song.

Neal Francis covers Strawberry Letter 23 on this.
I saw Neal a couple/few years ago at one of my favorite small venues: The Ark in Ann Arbor. 400 seats, super intimate, and yet he and his band just ripped. Such a great show.

I'll keep with the Neil theme but a very different artist.

When you love to tape shows you just love to tape shows and do it to preserve a moment in time and freely spread the music. There are a few bands out there who appreciate the time and monetary investment a fan puts into documenting and freely sharing their music to sell more records and merch and get more tickets sold to their gigs. In those cases, many will offer complimentary tickets for recording and sharing the show. Some of the bands who do this will surprise you.

Who had Cowboy Junkies on their bingo card?

Here's a song from a Cowboy Junkies show I taped 15 years ago. Margo Timmins has a voice that just makes me melt. I had lots of choices from this show to meet today's requirements (they played 7 covers, 2 by NY) but I landed on Cowboy Junkies interpretation of 'Don't Let It Bring You Down'...

Day 29: Fiona Apple September 2017, Ohana Festival – Was a surprise to see Fiona on the lineup at all, and she really hasn’t done many shows since then. Play something by an artist who focuses more on music than touring.

Back to Hopscotch. This time in 2013.

I was again a member of the team documenting every performance at the 3-day festival.

I was assigned to a show about a block away. I set up my gear. got my levels conservatively ok, hit record, locked it, grabbed my small recording rig and ran the block to the John Cale set. If my gear was still there when I got back, I considered that a bonus.

The best thing I saw that year. One of those sets you just know you're incredibly privileged to see as it's happening.

Here's the final product with all the different sources we recorded edited into a whole. I'm one of the backs of a head down front...

"I've no business being rock 'n' roll. I've said it over and over again that I'm a classical composer, disheveling my personality by dabbling in rock 'n' roll." - John Cale

This was a really amazing set to see. Fiona was incredibly nervous when she came out, after the first song the crowd sang Happy Birthday to her, which settled her nerves a bit and she took over from there as you can see in the video below. Looking at setlist.fm she's only done two shows since this set.

Day 22: Grateful Dead December 1989, Great Western Forum – Hearing the Dead bust out Help On The Way --> Slipknot! --> Franklin’s Tower to start the second set was a surprise in the best possible way. Play a rarity, or something that would blow you away if you heard it live.

Muriel Grossmann – The Light of the Mind

Not exceptionally rare, but limited to 1,000 AND an import, so it feels rare. And hearing Grossmann live at all would blow me away!

Cat Power - The Greatest

While she has always regularly toured, I assume that is mostly based on economics than actually out of desire. Cat Power had a bit of a reputation for being a bit skittish live. Sometimes cutting concerts short if she feels things aren’t going well. I saw her touring in support of this album, the concert was essentially just here solo with an electric guitar and piano on stage. It was a fantastic performance but everyone was so afraid of her panicking and fleeing the stage meant it was one of quietest concerts I have ever been to. She stuck it out and played a full show though more than a few times she apologized profusely following a song for mistakes that she made that no one noticed except for her. Thankfully as she has gotten older it seems like these anxieties have mellowed a bit. She even made a humorous short poking fun at her reputation with Funny Of Die.

Day 25 - Play something by someone that has appeared on a kids tv show.

Day 23: Björk / Interpol / Jesus & Mary Chain / Arctic Monkeys / Gillian Welch & David Rawlings / Noisettes April 2007, Coachella – Went primarily for Björk and the first Jesus & Mary Chain show in 6 years. This was back when Coachella sold one day passes. Saw a fantastic variety of bands that day. Play someone you saw at a festival, or someone who you would have headline your dream festival.

Tanya Tagaq – Tongues

I've seen her at two different festivals in two different provinces, twice a piece.

Oh man, this one is special, my wife was 4 months pregnant.
