March 2025 Challenge Thread - Live Music (Really) Is Better!

Day 17: Play an artist who speaks to you with their lyrics or delivery.

One of the most powerful concerts I’ve ever attended.

My favorite album:

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Let Love In

Day 17: The Pogues October 2009, House of Blues – Play an artist who speaks to you with their lyrics or delivery.

Nina Simone - High Priestess of Soul

She had such a powerful and distinct voice. I find myself hanging on to every word she sings.

Well, I gotta go with Tom Waits here. The first song I ever heard by him (Cold Cold Ground) had me transfixed with the combo of lyrical imagery and his delivery.
I saw him in Chicago in 1999, fantastic show. Turns out I can't find my stub... IMG_1502.JPG

Day 16: Drive~By Truckers May 2010, House of Blues – Play something by an artist you wish you could have seen.

I can only imagine how unpredictable and exciting it would've been to see The Doors.

The Doors played their last shows late in 1970. A recording exists of their 12-11-70 Dallas show. This one is of particular note as the band played songs that would end up on L.A. Woman.

I found this bootleg LP during my college daze and one side is from this show - The Changeling and LA Woman.

And here it is via YouTube. Sound quality is not good, but after you listen a few minutes your ears kind of adjust a bit. It's worth a play just to hear these songs played live. It's cued up...

The Doors - Celebration...some are born in the endless night...

Day 14: Play something for a friend.

We’ve been going to concerts together since 1991!

This was our last show pre-corona hiatus:

The Jesus and Mary Chain - B-Sides & Rarities Collection

I see the box set is being christened. Cheers!

Looking at the setlist and saw the restart on Halfway. For the life of me, I don't understand why they insist on playing that song every show. There are much better choices in the catalog. Even on Automatic, there are better choices.

Day 17: The Pogues October 2009, House of Blues – Play an artist who speaks to you with their lyrics or delivery.

I got a few core musical guys. Neil Young is one of those guys.

I taped this show in 1991. It's a Top 5 show ever for me.

Social Distortion and Sonic Youth opened. This happened to be the day the Gulf War, an unjust, corrupt war in Neil's view, was officially declared over. Neil wasn't having it. He played with even more ferocity and venom than the shows leading up to this day of 'victory'.

The setlist...

Here's my recording of Cortez from this show. Taped this on the down-low from the 5th row just left of center on Poncho's side. It's pretty dang good. This was the most plaintive song of the night. You can feel it all - fear, regret, pain, horror - in Neil's lyrics, vocal and everything he wrestles from Old Black...

The live record from this tour. It was out of print for decades and went for big bucks but was rereleased a year or two ago. If you don't own it, you really need to own it.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Weld

Last May I got to accompany @Hemotep to his first Neil Young show. This August I get to do the same with @Nee Lewman ...

Day 18: Madness / Fishbone / Pandoras May 1986, Hollywood Palladium – Play some Reggae / Ska or something worthy of a Party At Ground Zero.

Bob Marley - Live!

One of the all-time great live albums, and even better as 3LP.

Plus, the most random gig pairing I ever went to. Full on drum n bass and early Coldplay. It was a great gig. The other band members made wanker signs at Chris Martin during the gig is what I remember most.

Day 17: The Pogues October 2009, House of Blues – Happy Saint Patricks Day! Shane MacGowan wrote amazing lyrics, and had a voice that brought them to life. Play an artist who speaks to you with their lyrics or delivery.

Gotta go with the Pogues for the reasons above. You can absolutely inhabit their songs and characters based on Shane's delivery.

Seeing them for the first time in 2006 was something I didn't think would ever happen, let alone getting a few more shows in subsequent years. And having Shane do a little dance with Eliza Finer (Jem Finer of the Pogues daughter) at the end of Fairytale in New York was something special. Philip Chevron (who we lost in 2013) had a lovely voice as well, he wrote Thousands are Sailing, and sang it live at the shows, giving Shane a bit of a rest.

Day 18: Madness / Fishbone / Pandoras May 1986, Hollywood Palladium – Don’t remember a whole lot of this night, other than there was a lot of energy and dancing. Play some Reggae / Ska or something worthy of a Party At Ground Zero.

This trailer and album does a good job of rekindling those memories. I've seen Madness a few times since then, always a good time live as were the Specials. The English Beat not so much, its really just Dave Wakeling with a bunch of studio musicians. Even more annoying that he's doing shows with the General Public name now.

Anyway, lets get back to the fun.

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad is one of those bands that melds some combination of ska/reggae/dub into a fun time. Taped this show in 2010 at The Orange Peel, a 1K capacity room with the most unhelpful staff when it comes to getting your gear into shows by open taping bands and a most welcoming crew once you're inside. The true Jekyll and Hyde experience at this venue if you're a taper...

And keeping with the Jekyll and Hyde theme, this record would fit right in stylistically along with Workingman's Dead and American Beauty.

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad - Bright Days

Day 19: Flying Lotus / Brandon Coleman / Salami Rose Joe Lewis September 2019, House of Blues – Play something with an electronic or futuristic edge.

Björk - Homogenic Live

I don't have much electronic music, let alone love so it's back to the CDs for this. I got this for free when I worked as a music journalist. Kept trying to meet Björk but never succeeded.

Kraftwerk seemed the obvious choice of my own gigs for today - fab show...

Was reading an article recently after spotting the Apple Docu re : Jim still being alive, now I don't go for conspiracy theories at all.... But this one had me wondering. Might watch that one...

Day 19: Flying Lotus / Brandon Coleman / Salami Rose Joe Lewis September 2019, House of Blues – This was a Flying Lotus 3D show where they gave out 3D glasses, which worked great with the visualizations and music he had setup for the show. Play something with an electronic or futuristic edge.

I've seen a few shows with excellent visualizations / staging - Flying Lotus as mentioned above, Sigur Ros and Jonsi's solo tour, Neil Youngs Greendale Tour all come to mind, along with this spin.

Caught Cornelius on his US tour last year for Dream in Dream, definitely a bucket list show. Incredible musicanship in bringing the complex arrangements to life, and the lighting/visuals were perfectly synchronized with the music.

Cornelius ~ Fantasma

Day 16: Drive~By Truckers May 2010, House of Blues
Play something by an artist you wish you could have seen.

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - The Gennaro Tapes (Live In Edinburgh 1982)
IMG_5758.jpeg

What kills me is I had a chance to see him too a friend offer me tickets to go see Tom Petty play Safeco Field and but I had to work that day and it would’ve been an ordeal to get to the stadium on time so I passed I figured dude is always on tour I will see him the next time he rolls through. Sadly Petty died just a few months later.

Day 17: The Pogues October 2009, House of Blues – Play an artist who speaks to you with their lyrics or delivery.

Marah - Kids In Philly
IMG_5759.jpeg
Marah are a band that shares in a bit of the barstool poetry for which Shane MacGowan was known except it was straight out of Philly instead of Dublin.

Day 18: Madness / Fishbone / Pandoras May 1986, Hollywood Palladium – Don’t remember a whole lot of this night, other than there was a lot of energy and dancing. Play some Reggae / Ska or something worthy of a Party At Ground Zero.

Prince Jammy - Kamikazi Dub
IMG_5760.jpeg
I have never been to a Reggae, Ska, or Dub show. I should do that at some point.

Day 19: Flying Lotus / Brandon Coleman / Salami Rose Joe Lewis September 2019, House of Blues
Play something with an electronic or futuristic edge. that comes with a set of novelty eyewear.

Brightblack Morning Light - Brightblack Morning Light
IMG_5764.jpeg
The Flying Lotus show with 3D glasses immediately reminded me of this album which comes with a pair of “Rainspectrum” glasses…
IMG_5765.jpeg
…they state “Resist Babylon systems - One rainbow at a time” and make things look like this…
IMG_5761.jpeg

Day 20: L.A.M.F. / Jessie Malin December 2017, Belly Up Tavern – Play a ‘supergroup’ or an artist that’s also been part of a larger group.

Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes - Live at the Greek

Looking forward to checking out the extended version of this as this one is great enough.

Plus, Stevie has been in a few super groups. First saw him in fact perform with the Funk Brothers in London.

Went to a diving meet over the weekend, what else, and now I have another week to catch-up... let's go!!!

Day 12: The Strokes October 2019, Ohana Festival – This was probably the only time I felt like the crowd was out of control at a show. The rush of people to the stage when the Strokes hit the stage was like a wave, honestly a pretty scary feeling. Play something by an artist with rabid fans.

The Beatles "Revolver" (1966 odeon japan)
One of the original bands with rabid fans.
