March 2025 Challenge Thread - Live Music (Really) Is Better!

Day 13: Tash Sultana October 2019, Ohana Festival – As opposed to The Strokes, Tash played a mellow yet spectacular sunset set. Just her looping various instruments creating a great collage. Was wholly unfamiliar with her before, but have made it a point to see her every time since. Play something by a solo artist.

Tash Sultana "Flow State" (2018 Mom + Pop)
Ok, I'll play Tash.

Went to a diving meet over the weekend, what else, and now I have another week to catch-up... let's go!!!

Day 12: The Strokes October 2019, Ohana Festival – This was probably the only time I felt like the crowd was out of control at a show. The rush of people to the stage when the Strokes hit the stage was like a wave, honestly a pretty scary feeling. Play something by an artist with rabid fans.

The Beatles "Revolver" (1966 odeon japan)
One of the original bands with rabid fans.

We saw Paul McCartney a number of years ago. One of the people we went with casually let it drop that she saw the Beatles at their only San Diego concert. She convinced her parents to drop her and a friend off (i think they were 10 or so at the time?), and attested to just how rabid the fans were.

In a similar boat @Turbo . Been working all week and fell behind, and heading to work and a volleyball tourney this weekend. Gonna catch up today, and then have to catch up when I get back. But I have all day to spin, so that's good!

Day 15: Flight To Mars May 2012, The Casbah – Flight To Mars was a UFO cover band formed by Mike McCready of Pearl Jam, and raised money every year for Chron's & Colitis foundation. 2012 was the one year they did a small tour, and it was great to see Mike in a small (250 person) room. Best part of the night was when Ace Frehley popped up on stage for Black Diamond. Play something with a guest star.

Iggy Pop - Post-Pop Depression

What a fun, ripping show. Queens of the Stone Age recorded on this one and did the tour too. Hearing Paraguay live was amazing! Iggy's energy is freaking ridiculous.

Day 20: L.A.M.F. / Jessie Malin December 2017, Belly Up Tavern – This was a celebration of the Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers album of the same name, with the lineup being Walter Lure (Heartbreakers), Mike Ness (Social Distortion), Clem Burke (Blondie), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols). Play a ‘supergroup’ or an artist that’s also been part of a larger group.

This was another fun, unexpected show. Along with the heaviness of the original Temple of the Dog material, there were some wonderful covers thrown in - A few Mother Love Bone songs for Andrew whose passing was the impetus for the band in the first place, along with Harry Nillson, Free, Bowie, Cure, Led Zeppelin, and others.

Day 14: Oingo Boingo December 1986, Hollywood Palladium – One of my favorite memories of my late friend Jim was seeing Oingo Boingo with him and jumping around in the pit. Play something for a friend.

Leonard Cohen "Various Positions" (1985 Columbia)
I'll play something for a late friend as well. This is for Mike, who was a Montrealer through and through.

Day 16: Drive~By Truckers May 2010, House of Blues – I’ve seen the DBT many times over the years, and more often than not they close out with Let There Be Rock, which name checks bands that Patterson Hood saw, or didn’t see, and includes this refrain at the end:

So I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd
But I sure saw Ozzy Osbourne with Randy Rhoads in 82
Right before that plane crash.
And I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd but I sure saw AC/DC
With Bon Scott singing, "Let There Be Rock Tour".

Play something by an artist you wish you could have seen.

The Clash - London Calling

The Flaming Lips "American Head" (2020 Warner)
Kacey Musgraves guest stars on three tracks.

I never saw The Clash, but I sure saw Big Audio Dynamite at the Roxy in 1987 with my brother. In retrospect, might have been the last time I went to a show with him. He's not much of a concert guy.

I would've loved that too. Wish I could find a reasonable copy of The Globe. That was a really fun band.

Day 17: The Pogues October 2009, House of Blues – Happy Saint Patricks Day! Shane MacGowan wrote amazing lyrics, and had a voice that brought them to life. Play an artist who speaks to you with their lyrics or delivery.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - No More Shall We Part

Lyrics, delivery, all that is superb. Looking forward to seeing him in a couple months without a bunch of clowns asking stupid questions.

Day 18: Madness / Fishbone / Pandoras May 1986, Hollywood Palladium – Don’t remember a whole lot of this night, other than there was a lot of energy and dancing. Play some Reggae / Ska or something worthy of a Party At Ground Zero.

The Fleshtones - Roman Gods

These guys were all over the house live. Running around the room, standing on booths in the back. What a party!

David Bowie "Live Nassau Coliseum '76" (2016 Parlophone)
Goes without saying.

Day 19: Flying Lotus / Brandon Coleman / Salami Rose Joe Lewis September 2019, House of Blues – Play something with an electronic or futuristic edge.

Here's another one I recorded at the trusty 13.13 Club.

Went to see my guys The Jesus And Mary Chain here in 1990.

There was a little opening band called Nine Inch Nails.

Sin...

I saw this tour in 1995 and, depending on your musical circle, I'd consider this a supergroup of the time...

MIke Watt - B/V
Eddie Vedder - G/V
Pat Smear - G/V
Dave Grohl - D
William Goldsmith - D

This show is from Mike Watt's 1995 Ring Spiel tour and included Foo Fighters and Hovercraft as opening bands.

Here's a pretty rough recording from the show with Eddie singing 'Habit', a song that would reappear on No Code over a year later...

The live record from this tour...

Day 21: Yngwie Malmsteen May 2019, House of Blues– Went with a friend who wanted to see some shredding. Fully enjoyed the experience. Play something with a shredding guitar solo.

When I need shredding, I often turn to Lord Mascis for fulfillment.

He never let's me down.

This was billed as a solo acoustic show, but one little stomp of a pedal can change all that. I managed to pull a pretty sweet recording at this one...

Fontaines D.C. "Romance" (2024 XL Recordings)
St. Patrick's day demands an Irish band. This is one of my favorites of recent years. Interesting lyrics and delivery - plus Grian Chatten's voice has evolved quite a bit following his solo project prior to this release.

Day 19: Flying Lotus / Brandon Coleman / Salami Rose Joe Lewis September 2019, House of Blues – Play something with an electronic or futuristic edge.

Shabazz Palaces - Black Up

Experimental hip-hop duo, Shabazz Palaces was one of the groups that first helped get me into hip-hop. Hearing this for the first time in 2011 totally shattered my ignorant preconceived notions of the genre.

Fireworks, Lasers, Fire, Shredding Guitar Solos, and excellent sound even in the rafters of a baseball stadium, this show had it all.
