March 2025 Challenge Thread - Live Music (Really) Is Better!

Day 9: Play something by a band that has kept the fans in mind.

Stereolab - Cobra and Phases Group Play Voltage in the Milky Night

A few years back, Stereolab showed how you can do reissues of your catalog for the fans, with high-quality pressings, great bonuses, and decent prices. Rocking it digitally, since I'm at work and Elmo Muskovic wouldn't let us federal employees bring turntables to the office:

Day 19: Flying Lotus / Brandon Coleman / Salami Rose Joe Lewis September 2019, House of Blues – This was a Flying Lotus 3D show where they gave out 3D glasses, which worked great with the visualizations and music he had setup for the show. Play something with an electronic or futuristic edge.

Thundercat "Apocalypse" (2014 Brainfeeder; 10th anniversary edition)
Thundercat is in the same vein as Flying Lotus with his futuristic edge.

Day 11: Play something by an artist who had a release that disappointed you, or that was disappointing in concert.

Tortoise - Standards

It wasn't their fault someone in the band had covid, but I was very disappointed that night that the show was cancelled, especially since we were visiting Portland on vacation, and had to take a refund rather than catching them when they returned.

Day 22: Grateful Dead December 1989, Great Western Forum – Hearing the Dead bust out Help On The Way --> Slipknot! --> Franklin’s Tower to start the second set was a surprise in the best possible way. Play a rarity, or something that would blow you away if you heard it live.

Got the double rarity during the acoustic set at this Black Crowes show in 2010.

First is a take on The Carter Family's 'East Virginia Blues'. This was a first time played by the band. Naturally, being in Raleigh, the "North Carolina I did go" line gets the cheer. Looks like this song was only played 9 times on this tour. Pretty cool to see the debut.

Next we've got the even rarer Crowes song 'Smile'. Originally recorded during the Band sessions, reworked during the sessions for By Your Side and ultimately released as B-Side, this one rarely sees the stage. This show was the first performance with a full band.

Here are both songs for your enjoyment. I always liked taping outdoors as long as the wind was chill - even with mic muffs, a strong wind can still potentially wreck a recording. Also like being able to crank that mic stand high. Helps minimize crowd noise a bit and the fact there's no sound reflection makes for a more direct recording. That said, there's still some nice stereo separation on this one.

The Black Crowes - 'East Virginia Blues' & 'Smile' - Uptown Amphitheatre, Raleigh, NC 9-17-10

A funny story about this show - a guy named Russ sat beside me. He was from Vermont and was following the east coast leg of the tour. This was my first show of 6 I saw in 2010. Over the next 5 shows, I randomly saw Russ at 4 of them - once on the street, twice in a bar and once inside the venue. Music makes weird, wonderful things happen.

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

I saw Paul when he was a headliner at Austin City Limits. The show was incredible but the part that floored me was when he announced he’d be playing a song as a tribute to John.

The song he chose was “Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite!”. I really did not expect him to pick a deep cut like that, but it was great.

Gotta go with the best possible version of this song (although the version on Without a Net is pretty fantastic too). This pulls into the lead by kicking off the album with a classic intro from Bill Graham calling in the band members one by one. IMO the best Live Dead album to get on vinyl.

Some great concert memories associated with this song. Being in GA on Jerry's side for the show above and some fantastic work by Brent Mydland. Then seeing the Dead with Warren Haynes in 2004 and they teased us with Help on the Way --> Slipknot to end the first set, and then Franklin's Tower to close out the second. Bill Walton being in the audience, naturally.

Warren also opened that show solo, and played a version of Stella Blue that captured the crowd. So good.

If you get confused, listen to the music play

Day 21: Yngwie Malmsteen May 2019, House of Blues Play something with a shredding guitar solo.

MJ Lenderman - Manning Fireworks
IMG_4935.jpeg
The last show we attended was MJ Lenderman and The Wind. He closed out the set with an epic guitar work out of his tracks “Bark At The Moon” which is named after the Ozzy tune but isn’t a cover so much as a reference to spending all of his time in his room mastering “Bark At The Moon” on Guitar Hero.

Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
IMG_5785.jpeg
We saw Radiohead on the Moon Shaped Pool Tour back in 2017 and it was spectacular the set included 3 encores including a final encore performance of “Fake Plastic Trees” which was essentially an audience sing-a-long with Thom leading the way. The most notable track performance that night was “These Are My Twisted Words” it’s a 2009 non-album single that the band hadn’t played live since 2012 and it was the only time that song was performed on the entire A Moon Shaped Pool Tour.

Day 20: L.A.M.F. / Jessie Malin December 2017, Belly Up Tavern – This was a celebration of the Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers album of the same name, with the lineup being Walter Lure (Heartbreakers), Mike Ness (Social Distortion), Clem Burke (Blondie), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols). Play a ‘supergroup’

I could really use a better pressing of this...this is worse sounding than I remember.

Day 21: Yngwie Malmsteen May 2019, House of Blues– Went with a friend who wanted to see some shredding. Fully enjoyed the experience. Play something with a shredding guitar solo.

I saw SRV in 1985 in Ann Arbor, 8th row center. Foggy memories and no ticket stub.
I have always loved the solo in Come On.

Heck yes.

Day 23: Björk / Interpol / Jesus & Mary Chain / Arctic Monkeys / Gillian Welch & David Rawlings / Noisettes April 2007, Coachella – Went primarily for Björk and the first Jesus & Mary Chain show in 6 years. This was back when Coachella sold one day passes. Saw a fantastic variety of bands that day. Play someone you saw at a festival, or someone who you would have headline your dream festival.

Radiohead - The Year of the Mud

Very appropriate title for this excellent bootleg of probably the best gig I ever went to. From Thom's shriek during opener Lucky to the fireworks randomly going off during No Surprises, this set from Glastonbury 97 was pretty much perfect. And with it my somewhat random ticket for the festival - I'd befriended the Scottish group the Supernaturals and I got two free tickets that I used, only to come back home and find they'd sent two more. I must say I was v nervous going up to the gates as there was nothing on the ticket that said Glastonbury. And yes it was v v muddy, but it was an incredible weekend.

Day 18: Play some Reggae / Ska or something worthy of a Party At Ground Zero.

Unfortunately the setlist is empty for this one:
