Yeah, IDK. I definitely am not a subject matter expert. Slipknot and Nu Metal would fall in the metal and hip-hop overlap on my genre Venn diagram.Nu Metal, which technically isn't metal even though it's in the name. At least according to the old-heads.
Nu Metal is a fusion genre with hard rock. It shares more in common with alt rock or hard rock than it does metal roots.
Also see: Tool. It's alt metal/nu metal/progressive hard rock. Not "metal".
Either way, they are both heavy, so if you want to call them metal I'm not going to argue with you - just sharing perspective of the pedants out there.
I totally agree about Tool though, I never thought of them as Metal in so much as I alway associated them more with industrialish hard rock (NIN, Marilyn Manson, Ministry, Etc..) though there is certainly an overlap in all these styles which obviously makes them it tough to pigeonhole any of them
