MoFi UltraDeck / StudioDeck Owners and those interested

I’ve been really curious to do something for mono pressings being being the majority of my listening will be classic jazz pressings. I’d really love to hear my Are You Experienced mono original pressing through a mono cart.

I’m assuming switching carts on the studiodeck would be a ridiculous method so maybe worth keeping my pl530 as a mono deck. Who knows, maybe I’ll love my mofi so much that I’ll eventually get a ultradeck and turn the studiodeck into my mono deck. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Well, I had two systems at one point, consisting of an Ultradeck and PLX 1000, long story short, we condensed down to 1, made a few changes and eventually ended up Technics SL 1210G, after a 1210GR. One, because if I was going to consolidate I wanted the best I could afford as a TT, and two, cartridge happy me with failing eyes made the removable head shell a must and a God send. ;)

I think swapping from stereo to mono on any deck without a removable head shell would, eventually, turn anyone off from wanting to swap it out to enjoy a few mono pressings............just my opinion of course.

I think you’re right. My eyes are finally starting to go as I inch toward 50 so setting up a cart every time would get old quick. Guessing I’ll keep my pl530 and try making it a mono deck until I come to a verdict on the studiodeck when it arrives.

Curious about opinions on what cart to add to the StudioDeck when it arrives. I’m sure there’s content within the thread and I’m working my way through it now, but I’m leaning toward the Grado Timbre Opus 3. Are there better suited carts In the $200-$400 range for the StudioDeck considering my listening habit will be as follows:

Mostly jazz with some rock, grunge and hip-hop mixed in and mostly used (but cleaned in ultrasonic rcm).

Thanks in advance!
I’d keep the Shure you have and put a Jico stylus on it- the best one you can afford. You’d have to spend $750 or more to better it. Possibly a lot more.

@AnthonyI makes a valid point- this coming from a 57 year old Technics owner.

The Shure will work great on a Technics should you decide to go that route.

Question for those of you that know while we are on the subject of mono… is a mono switch acceptable at a certain level… like with my grado prestige would a mono switch work as well as having a prestige mono stylus?

Yes the mono switch will work.

Changing to a mono stylus isn’t going to though- you need a mono cartridge body.

👍 well I guess I meant cart. Like is the switch comparable to having a dedicated mono cart?

Depends. Some mono cartridges are really stereo cartridges with the outputs strapped together- the same thing a mono botton does.

A true mono cartridge will have either a single coil (like a Denon DL-102) or have the coils oriented to ignore the vertical signal from the groove.

The MoFi arm does have a detachable headshell, it’s just that it is very tricky to get it off and on. It involves loosening a tiny grub screw beneath the arm with a very small hex wrench, taking off the four wires that attach to the cartridge, and then gently feeding them through the rear of headshell as you pull it free from the arm. Then, to get it back on you need to reverse the above process. Not something you’d want to do each time you decided to spin a few mono LPs! Also other members here have stripped the tiny hex screw head trying to undo it (or over tighten it).

I was under the impression they have a low compliance.
The MoFi carts’ compliance is specified at 100hz, which makes calculating the compliance at 10hz kind of a pain. Honestly I’m not sure where they sit on the scale we’re accustomed to.

The MoFi arm works great with most medium/low compliance carts.
