MoFi UltraDeck / StudioDeck Owners and those interested

Technical question: If i thought i was hearing static type noise in left channel and thought it was due to anti-skate setting (as opposed to any other reason), I think I would need to slide the O-ring in the direction towards the cartridge to test for that and attempt to correct. Is that the correct direction?

Trying to keep that question as basic as possible. I know there are ways to check anti-skate, what Mofi says about which notch the O-ring should be on, etc.

Welcome, @ithinkitsdark! You got a heck of a deal on a killer setup. Just echoing the gang here - time to sit back and listen for a while!

I'm a longtime StudioPhono owner and user - have had it since I want to say 2017? Shortly after launch. And will further echo, it's just a solid performer with some great features at the price. Nothing mindblowing, but I continue to seem to stick with it. Well rounded in its voicing, allows the sound to bloom nicely with the VPI I have it paired with. The mono and subsonic filter switches are nice to have, as are the loading options. Really wish it had a 50dB gain setting, though.

I also have static in left channel , but its not the cartridge and its been going on and off for years and i cannot find the source ---sorry off track . I have moved the o ring to all four settings and have not heard any real consistent change on my system given my older ears.

So … theoretically, if that were to have any effect on my issue, would it increase or decrease noise in left channel?
I believe the inner groove is the left channel, so increasing anti-skate would reduce the force against that side of the groove, and decreasing anti-skate would increase. So it kind of depends on whether you think the noise is due to excessive or insufficient force.

I had an old Duel 505-2 that had an anti skate adjustment ring and when turned in one direction or the other the sound balance would move right or left and the quality of the music would change . Changing the anti skate on the old Duel or the MOFI never caused any static . Online research mention the setting can cause changes in the music you hear , but I have not run across any mention of the term static in describing the sound changes . Are you sure that the anti skate is causing the sound . A quick adjustment between ring 1 and 4 would tell you if its the anti skate . Is it all records , and is the static consistent across the record ?

Static may not be the best word, and I’m not Even sure it’s happening at all due to antiskate. It could just be specific records that have pressing issues. I’m just interested in testing it and wanted to understand left v right sides as it relates to pull on the inner groove or drag on the outer.

I asked Mr. Google and here is what was said .

What channel is the inner groove?

The left channel is the groove side closest to the spindle ("inner side")

Over the past two days when I drop the cue lever on my SD the arm drops quickly in the record. If I raise the arm away from the arm rest, it does stay up. It just drops too damn fast. I searched and it wasn’t clear to me if the downward drop is adjustable or if it needs replaced. Any insights appreciated.

Double check the cartridge alignment, perhaps? I was using the same combo and don't recall issues with it. The 1000LT is a very light cart, so you'll want to be using the innermost* (well, second from innermost) anti-skate setting.

Has anything else changed regarding setup ie counterweight/tracking force or arm balance or cart alignment as Kvetcha mentioned . Oil on deck under clue leaver . Has the arm been accidentally banged .

No goo on the table, but there is a mess of goo at the bottom of the mechanism. If I lower the lever down real slow it’s ok. If there’s no way to refill the fluid, that’s game over for that part. If there is a way to refill it, I suspect an o-ring inside is shot and refilling will only last so long.

Edit: No banging of the arm or other movement has been made lately.

@VMPKJ and @Slimwhit33 had issues with this, I think. Normally tonearm damping fluid is replaceable, but I don’t know if that’s the case here.

Like Kvetcha noted , I remember others who had this problem and maybe they can offer comments , I would reach out to your dealer/MOFI to see what they say about either refilling or replacement of the part . Is it still under warrantee?

Warrantee is likely long gone. This happened cause I was shopping around for a 1210G, I just know it. I do plan to keep the SD in a different system. I did search and saw the posts where this was mentioned, but other than replacing the table I didn't find definitive info. I'll reach out to Mofi and see what they say. If the table wasn't so finicky to set up, I'd pull this part off and inspect it closer, I just don't want to mess with the VTA. That little grub screw on the bottom has me curious...must resist!

Yes resist that little grub screw and let us know what MOFI says as it increases the body of info on the forum . Watch out for Turn table ghost from the past as it is the season . That or just bad luck and timing .

@kvetcha is right. I had a similar issue with my initial Ultradeck. On mine, the cue lever wouldn’t stay up, and it had leaked fluid. I called Music Direct (who I purchased it from) and they had me send it back and replaced the entire arm assembly. It was still under warranty.

I’d try your dealer first @scorpio333 and then try MoFi Electronics.

Sent an email to Mofi. I bought the table used. Then I had the arm “crash” while adjusting VTA. Mofi repaired it, took six months due to Covid. Been fine ever since. Moving parts fail, a fact of life. The person I bought it from, bought it at a dealer across town. Funny, I’ve been trying to contact them if they had the 1210G in stock to play around with. One way or another, I’ll definitely report back when I hear something.
