Nice summary of the process in one place! Lithium greese or MoFi's own ($$$) grease is what is recommended by MoFi, but some suggest SuperLube "Multipurpose synthetic grease" which I have been using and seems to work well. In addition to a sparse amount on the side of the spindle, I also put a small dollop on the top to make sure the thrust bearing gets some.
I'd be curious as well if anyone tried any dry lubricants, such as silicone, Teflon, or graphite?
I've had to relube twice now, not that I use my Studio deck a great deal, but because of light noise. The second time I lubed I noticed the spindle had a light groove wore in it, which lead me to find a small burr inside the platter bearing. I cleaned it out real good with Q-tips then sanded the problem area with 600 grit sand paper until the q-tip no longer hung up on the problem spot. Relubed and been going good ever since.
