Movies

Just finished the Snyder Cut after watching Man Of Steel and BvS, both for the first time.

It's not a bad trilogy. I haven't seen the Whedon cut to compare, but this was a decent "ending"

I will just make two threads. "Good movies" and "dumb movies" and be the sole arbiter of what goes where.

What about good, dumb movies?
Still in dumb movies. Sometimes it’s nice to talk about fun dumb movies (like Aquaman!). Sometimes it’s overwhelming how they dominate all discussion. We also already have the criterion thread for “pretentious movies”

As someone for whom none of Zack Snyder's previous movies have been my jam, I'll be sitting JL out.... BUT I'm legitimately happy that it's making so many people for whom it is their jam happy.

I understand this means I am a bad internet user, so I'll try to make up for it by injecting some idiotic vitriol into some other post over the next few days!

I’m with you. I have never enjoyed anything he had directed. I would rather spend that 4 hours watching Speed and Big Trouble In Little China.

For those with HBO, who want something fun and foreign to watch, La odisea de los giles ("The Odyssey of the Fools"... although it's marketed as Heroic Losers in English), starring the great Ricardo Darín, is a heist movie about a group of rural nobodies in Argentina in 2001, when the financial crisis hits and a thieving lawyer steals all the money they'd saved to open a co-op in their small town. They decide to steal the money back, but it ends up being a bit more complicated than they expected... It isn't gonna blow your mind or anything, but it's an underdog heist film done well with some quirky characters.

And while I'm thinking of Argentina, one of my favorite heist films ever also stars Ricardo Darín- Nueve Reinas (Nine Queens), about two conmen who team up to sell some fake stamps.

I actually enjoyed his Dawn of the Dead, despite the fact that his "Milwaukee" was so obviously not Milwaukee enough for this SE Wisconsinite. I'm usually not much for zombies (even if 28 Days Later is one of my fave movies—a huge exception!), and I weirdly much prefer Romero's own Day to his Dawn. Snyder's actually got a heart from me on Letterboxd. Pretty much in agreement on everything else of his though, ha. (Army of the Dead looks fun though!)

I've never seen the Whedon Justice League, but am watching the Snyder cut out of curiosity. I watched over half of it last night, and I want to point out the abuse of Song to the Siren, a beautiful song about a person's obsession becoming their own destruction, which was used to dramatically portray a character, in slow motion, rescuing a flying hot dog in JL.

Also, there were multiple lines that said something like "you smell like the mother box."

I guess Snyder films just aren't made for me.

This happened to me when I watched Big Little Lies a couple years ago- I live in Monterey, but it was painfully obvious to me that some of it was filmed in southern California. Then there were all the times I was thinking "um, no rich locals would be hanging out THERE- it's a pure tourist trap!" or "um, if they just crossed that bridge on their drive across town then they just took an hour-and-a-half round trip for what should have been a 5 minute drive!"
