Movies

My wife and I went to see Annette tonight. The story and all of the songs are by the band Sparks. Early in the film I turned to my wife and compared it to David Lynch if he had directed a musical. Very bizarre, maybe a little too long, but I'm glad we saw it in a theater. It'll be streaming on Amazon Prime in a couple of weeks.
Just watched the Sparks doc a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it despite knowing virtually nothing about the band. I heard about this one shortly after and am really curious about it. I am down for a surreal musical.

Last weekend I watched the Anthony Bourdain doc Roadrunner, which I do recommend highly - with some caveats. One being that it's incredibly hard to watch. Although I think it's great at giving you very good looks into Bourdain's life and career, there is this impending doom that just hangs over everything, naturally. I had to choose to try and remember all the inspiration that he gave throughout his life, cause by the end I was in a mood. Also, knowing a few things about the 1) narration and 2) mural thing at the end, I can't help but feel like it cheapens some aspects of it...but that's all I'll say for now.

On another note, Jungle Cruise was a fun little movie going detour. Honestly felt like an Indiana Jones movie with Emily Blunt and The Rock, who imo are a very pleasant duo to give some attention to. Great fun if you need a break from all the serious flicks

i went to the drive in last night - for the first time since the mid 2000s! - to see a double feature of jungle cruise and black widow, both movies i didn't really care if i saw or not, but both ended up being more enjoyable than i thought they'd be, especially jungle cruise. jungle cruise has some problems (starting with the very awkward coming out scene and portrayal of that character) but i second the praise for the rock/emily blunt pairing as their performances carried the movie. i also agree it felt like an indiana jones movie, which is not a bad thing. and the puns, ohhhh the puns. black widow was also carried by its cast, though it's not as fun. i've only seen maybe half of the non-avenger marvel movies, so i'm not an expert on these characters, which thankfully wasn't really an issue with this film. it's largely self contained and the story is fairly easy to follow. i missed a good chunk of the middle (like the reveal of the cyborg character) because our teenage neighbors needed a jump after running their car battery out, but even then i don't think i missed a beat. black widow is definitely less superhero-y than much of the other marvel movies and that's probably to its benefit- again, it let the cast shine and pretty much everyone in it, especially the top three of johansson/pugh/harbour, made the most of their characters.

Suicide Squad was fine. Like a not as good Deadpool 2. It was too long, but there were a lot of fun moments. Very comic booky, in a good way.
I think bringing Will Smith back would have elevated it to great. Rick Flag having to mesh with the light-hearted comedic parts felt out of sorts. I even thought that during the first one when he and Deadshot would trade verbal blows (he says "you kill people for money" like 8 times). Cutting out his character early on would've been fine in place of having Smith, Cena and Elba as the lead trio.

Anyone have any Shudder recommendations? I just signed up for the free trial (been rotating streaming services, so currently I cancelled HBO max).

Yesss! I love Shudder.

Personal faves so far:

  • BLISS – post-punk laden addiction spin on vampirism
  • Daniel Isn't Real – Repressed imaginary friend wants revenge?
  • Horror Noire – A must-watch exclusive doc on the history of Black Horror
  • Knife + Heart – Queer French ode to Italian giallo films
  • Psycho Goreman – Fun ode to practical effects and 80's monster flicks
  • Butcher, Baker Nightmare Maker – Wild and under-the-radar queer-coded thriller
  • After Midnight – Another monster flick exploring divorce/separation
  • StageFright: Aquarius – Artsy slasher with a group of actors trapped in a theater
  • Coherence – Economical yet well shot sci-fi mindfuck
  • Shrew's Nest – Spanish agorophobe goes over the deep end
  • Dead & Buried – Something's not quite right in this seaside town where murdered tourists start coming back to life
  • Tigers Are Not Afraid – Orphans + supernatural influences + crime syndicates (a la Guillermo del Toro staples) by breakout director Issa Lopez
  • One Cut Of the Dead – A VERY fun take on zombies – not at all what you first think it is
  • Blood Quantum – A community of First Nations people fights to survive a zombie epidemic

Okay, I'll stop here, but I'm steadily making my way through a long list of other well-regarded movies on there.
