Movies

Finally got around to Malignant; I'd been looking forward to it as lots of people have described it as bug-nuts, especially in its last third.

My non-spoilery thought is that modern American horror movies have way more in common with action movies and cop movies than they do actual atmosphere and terror.

50th Anniversary of Friedkin's The French Connection, on tap for tonight.
Have you ever picked your feet in Poughkeepsie?

I watched Tom & Jerry the movie and... to my surprise, I didn't hate it!
I grew up on the old cartoons and the movie did keep a lot of the tropes from it which was nice nostalgia. I was kinda impressed that they were able to stretch a story across a movie using the 2 characters from a usually short cartoon but it didn't seem too forced. They weaved in a modernized plot around them and I couldn't have thought of a way for them to do it better. I'd probably not watch it again, but it was worth a watch.

Minor Premise finally hit the streaming subs on Hulu. Been wanting to see it for a while now, and the wait was so worth it!
Nice, lean sci-fi thriller that centers on the self. Really well done.

This looks like it's somewhere between Primer, Coherence, and the movie that Nic Cage's brother is trying to write in Adaptation.
A lot of people seem to relate it to Primer. Coherence is another good comparison! I actually think it's more akin to Possessor or Extracted. And maybe even a little Empathy Inc.

I posted a short spoiler-free review.

You invoked Timecrimes, I'm in.
There's no better time than now to mention for anyone who's not yet seen it — if an Edgar Wrightian kiwi Primer/Timecrimes spoof sounds fun to you, Mega Time Squad is a total blast!

Has anyone seen Andrei Rublev or La piscine? I just ordered the criterion blurays for them on amazon, in order to use the $10 off code: "10TRYPICKUP" [you have to have your order delivered to a pickup location).

Was just going to order Andrei Rublev, but it was only $24.99, so I was a penny shy of free shipping and then I saw La Piscine was $19.99. I haven't seen either of them, but heard great things and can't find either of them streaming anywhere.

Have not seen La Piscine yet, but Andrei Rublev is absolutely superb. The Criterion Blu-ray is the best it has ever looked, even if the available print they had to go off of aren't the most amazing. But the film itself is very poetic and visually stunning.

Seconding Andrei Rublev. Great stuff.

Never watched a single Daniel Craig Bond film, but now I am. Starting from the top and hoping it leads me right into the digital release of the new one. So far so good. Casino Royale is basically what I was expecting, and I am not disappointed.
I haven't seen the new one but if the others none are bad imo. They're all good bond movies.

Although I'm forever amused that no one ever got that Ian fleming's work was satire because he hated MI5 so, so much. (Viz: in the books, bond isn't super cool, he's such a dumb and shitty spy he literally goes around telling people his name, because he's too stupid to remember a cover)

So you're saying Archer is the more accurate representation?

Shang-Chi was cool. Great way of modernizing a hero who's actual original exists in racist and exploitative territory. The MCU-ization of this property is definitely a good thing. Acting was solid, and the martial arts was as great as you'd expect. I'm a sucker for great fight choreography.

But man, was the CGI over the top. I never really got the criticism that Black Panthers final battle was too CGI filled (other than those damned Rhino's), but this definitely garners that criticism. The final battle was one huge CGI-fest, actors in blue suits with blue props on a bluescreen set kind of shit. It actively makes me like the film less. You can tell it took a toll on the film's effects budget as well. There are several quick effect shots throughout the film, just one or two second shots, where the CGI is ABYSMALL. Felt like it turned into Men in Black for a couple seconds, but just on quick shots that were never held onto for long. I was reaching for answers as to why it was so bad until the final fight took place and answered my question for me. Granted it looked cool, it was just.....so...long.....

Excited to see him in upcoming films and projects.
