Watched Evil Dead Rise as it popped onto Max.
Thought it was really good - interesting that they took it away from the cabin/forest setting but understood why they needed to step away from that.

Didn't blow me away like the Evil Dead reboot but still I think it did well.
I didn't really like the reboot, found it a bit tedious. Every scene in the second half when the "monster" is chasing someone felt like a horror version of this scene

Saw Asteroid City today and a weirdly packed small theater (we only have AMCs around here and they always dump the smaller films into these small spaces). It was so great to see a new Wes Anderson movie in the theater.

the whole framing device thing at first felt kinda like uh here we go again I guess, but it really pays off as the story progresses. I think it’s his best use of a framing device narrative period. Also so much of the story felt so surprising as I purposefully stayed away from plot details and reviews online. I had no idea a goofy looking alien shows up, so that was the funniest part for me. But there’s also a lot of depth to what’s going on, which I didn’t grasp at first.

When it ended I wasn’t sure exactly how I felt, but after digesting it some more I think it’s my favorite of his since Moonrise Kingdom.

Did it lean into the comedy like Army of Darkness/Ash vs Evil Dead? It's been awhile since I saw a trailer, but I remember it looking more straight forward horror?

I never saw the 2013 reboot/reimagining but do they all lean to the horror like the '81 original?

Honestly, I like the addition of comedy in later installments/tv series because it was done so well.
I think it might actually be the scariest Evil Dead film. There are some goofy moments as to be expected, but this one is mostly pretty dark. Alyssa Sutherland is unhinged (and great). It's probably my least favorite ED movie, but mainly because the other characters aren't very memorable. Everything else rips.

i liked Elemental!! it was a very cute movie!

it does suffer from the generic “opposites attract” love story trope that was clearly put in there by force, but man, when the movie doesn’t focus on that aspect and digs into themes of cultural heritage and identity conflicts that immigrant kids go through in some way or another, it really gets going!! i will say the final scene/shot was soo beautifully executed, it is for sure one of my favorite final shots in a movie.

and also it was such a visually stunning movie!! loved how creative and playful the characters and universe interacted and intertwined with one another. so yea, good kid movie

Just wanted to echo everyone else's thoughts on Evil Dead Rise. Thought it was a lot of fun and had the over the top gore and campy bits I was hoping for. Liked how they moved it away from the cabin, and did so in a way that kept things contained in a way that mostly made sense. I also really liked the references to the older movies, particularly in the second half of the film. Groovy.

My go to films to binge have always been Jackie Chan's earlier films. I recently watched a lot of his 70's films (Drunken Master, Fists of Fury, Snake in the Eagles Shadow, etc) and moved onto his more contemporary 80's films, with Police Story kicking off proceedings.

I've always felt this was bad. Then The Predator came out and took the crown (by a small margin). Now i'm thinking maybe Predator 2 is the worst one. Curious to see what i'm feeling after (while?) i'm giving The Predator another rewatch.

Predator 2 is rough especially when compared to its predecessor.
Oh, yeah, it's such a step down. The acting, dialog, special effects and some bit cringy stereotypical characters. Predator was a hit yet this one feels like a bit more like some direct-to-DVD sequel. To me, it also proved that the Predator does not work in an urban setting. Which is why Predator is a classic, Predators is very good and, from what I've heard, Prey is great. Just put a Predator(s) in a jungle or nature against some badass human(s) and you're good.
