Movies

Saw Portrait of a Lady on Fire last weekend. It was kinda hard to square the hype (I’ve been hearing about this movie for almost a year now) with the reality, but I was describing it to my wife later on and realized it got under my skin a lot more than I’d thought.

It was a little super cheesy that Heloise would have the book open to page 28 in her portrait, and that the artist would include that page number as a detail. I know, it’s a movie and I should really just relax. But that detail strained credulity a bit.

Also saw The Manchurian Candidate for the first time this weekend. Somehow it’s been a cultural blindspot for me, though it’s such a widespread cultural reference that I’d already absorbed it by osmosis. I did love some of the imagery and editing; Frankenheimer is pretty boss.

So while I really really loved this film, I agree with what you've got in the spoiler tag, mostly because it felt a bit tonally predictable for a romance drama, and the rest was anything but. The last shot totally transcends any of that though, really stunning closer.

Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker dropped on iTunes tonight.

It wasn't supposed to be available digitally until March 17th. Not sure why it was expedited but I for sure will be watching this for the first time ASAP.

I haven't seen it yet either. I wonder when it's coming to Disney+ ...

If it's like other recently released Disney movies, you have 6 months to wait.

However, I suspect longer. They only just added episode 8 this past December.

Although today Disney announced that they are already adding Frozen 2 this weekend, three months early, so you never know. I think they're adding some things early to help people who are quarantined.

I heard that Rise Of Skywalker dropped early because everyone is home.

I went ahead and bought it. Never got out to see it in the theater. Gonna to a marathon of all 3 new ones tomorrow....If I'm feeling up for it.

EDIT - this reminds me that I never finished the last couple episodes of Mandalorian, either.

That last few are the best ones. It this sounds like a good time enjoy.

Misbehaviour was a great little film , entertainment with a message but done beautifully..worth checking out for fans of Brit films

The big Q is giving me some movie time so I just re-watched There Will Be Blood, and I still am in awe at DDL's turn as oil tycoon Daniel Plainview. I think this is my 3rd viewing and I still don't understand how he gets to that level. Watching that, then his Oscars acceptance speech and am absolutely floored.

"I'm an oil man, ladies and gentleman."

One of the all time greats. Forced a few friends to watch this one a couple weeks ago.

So I had wanted to fully catch up on last year's films (mostly foreign), do some re-watching and get around to a number of films that somehow passed me by (Call Me By Your Name, Dunkirk, The Reverent) before releasing this....

But with everyone in quarantine it seems like a good time to drop my 125 favorite films of last decade. It was a ten year period where I was, at one point, watching 150+ films a year. An era where bold and brilliant films often got lost in a sea of content.

Needless to say, I highly recommend every film on this list (and that conversation is encouraged in the comment section):

Ok, a few quarantine watches:

Zodiac - I like this movie, but have never connected with it as much as many people whose tastes I share. It's really well crafted, but the very mundanity which makes it effective kinda puts me at arm's length.

The Italian Job (1969) - Real fun movie, great action, and great ending.

Jojo Rabbit - I was in the middle on this one; I think the movie's balancing several tones and nails it like 70% of the time. Not as moving or offensive as people have made it out to be. We facetimed with a friend and her two kids watching this. The younger was 7, and you could really tell they were in for some conversations after this one.

Wayne's World 2 - Felt like they tried to make a feature-length SNL skit based on the movie Wayne's World.

I finally saw Frozen 2. It was okay... the visuals were gorgeous, the music was... bad... except that one REALLY out of context 80's love ballad in the middle, that was rad, and really weird.
