Movies

So don’t watch it? It looks interesting but spooky. I’m wimpy and don’t like scary movies.

It's very unsettling and depressing. I'm glad I saw it a while ago when I was in a stronger place mentally/emotionally/existentially. If I saw it right now, 10 months into quarantine while holding a tiny baby and being sleep deprived and anxious, it'd be very triggering.

I would also characterize it as unsettling. But mostly in a "whaaaaat is going on?" way. I don't really think thriller/horror makes sense as a genre characterization. Definitely need to be in a patient mood for some arty weirdness. I'm glad I watched it but I don't know if I'd say it was super satisfying. Kinda made me wish I had read the book.

Ok WW84 - I'll not get into the fact that you made a jet invisible. This is, after all, a movie that has me buy into superpowers and an invisible jet is canon.

HOWEVER....you expect me to believe 1) a WWII pilot would get into a Gen 4/5 fighter and be able to adapt in seconds; 2) They seemed to have gotten it in a Smithsonian hangar or something....so the Smithsonian is keeping fueled a/c on a runway?; 3) Speaking of fueled, let's suppose it's FULLY fueled....D.C. to Cairo ONE WAY is almost 6K miles...modern jets, even w/out a standard loadout have a range of ~2K miles (Note: it seems to be an F-111, which - while having an impressive range - would not make it to Cairo)

The real crime....if you were a more entertaining movie, then I wouldn't find myself asking these questions.

Has anyone else watched Soul?

We watched it earlier today and I absolutely love it (jazz and Pixar....hell yeah!)! I personally preferred the straight ahead 'real world' parts but I still loved the story overall and really enjoyed all the jazz (the on the nose and subtle parts!).

In fact, I just managed to order the jazz soundtrack (there are 2 soundtracks, the Jon Batiste jazz-based one and the Atticus Ross/Trent Reznor one) and cant wait to listen properly.

On a side note, its well worth watching the behind the scenes/extras!

I'll have to watch the extras.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, and ordered the Reznor score from Target. The soundtrack on Spotify has the Reznor/Ross stuff and Batiste, as well as songs by Cody Chesnutt and Daveed Diggs. I wish there was a vinyl soundtrack that had a combination of all of that.

I quite like how there are 2 sets but it would be nice to have an overall one that combined them. I think they should have done something with the packages to link them as well. From what I’ve seen online, the Atticus Ross/Trent Reznor one has a gatefold spread of the portal looking down to earth and the Jon Batiste one is images of each member of the Dorothea Williams group, so they don’t really connect.

Still, they both look like nice packages and the music is fantastic so I can’t wait.

I too wish we could get a dual pack.

For Soul, I'll have some more thoughts but it's the first time since quarantine I really missed the... world. Not just elements of it but the whole package. It may be odd but it was like affirming in a way only some art can be. I loved it.

Before my daughter was born, my wife and I used to watch a lot of movies. Now that she’s been of movie viewing age(daughter), we tend to watch more kid friendly movies.
My goal for the new year is to change that.
We did watch Soul last night and loved it. It had some elements of Inside Out. I think for some of the kiddos, the deeper meaning will get lost on them, but that’s ok. My daughter enjoyed all of the funny parts 😁

I’ve heard nothing but bad stuffs about WW84 so I’ll probably get around to watching that after my wife sees WW1. I didn’t particularly care for 1. Unless it’s Batman of Watchmen, I find DC movies to be not interesting. I’ve still yet to see Joker or the Harley Quinn movie.

I really loved Soul and think it's honestly up there with Pixar's best. It handles hard topics in surprising ways. Like I feel there were multiple ways they could have dumbed it down or made it incredible cliche but they didn't and I appreciate that. I also appreciate simply the fact that it's an animated movie about a middle-aged black man who has to navigate the ideas of life and death. Some parts were pretty heavy for me right now, but I still think it has a sweet, simple message that feels really good by the end. Also it has some of the most interesting and beautiful animation Pixar has done.

Also I did enjoy the Trent / Atticus score, but I wonder if it wouldn't have been better if the entire score was just the jazz stuff. Cause I enjoyed that more. Did not know you could get both versions of the soundtracks but I am gonna jump on that.

I agree with this, I just listened to the entire combined score (Trent/Atticus mixed with the Batiste and songs) and really enjoyed the Batiste jazz compositions more than anything. Granted, I’m not a huge movie score guy but felt like the jazz bits were so great I wanted more.

This is also known as "damning with faint praise".

What's the competition here, suicide squad? Teen titans? Aquaman? Batman vs superman?
my comment was more poking fun at the fact that it seems like at least one review for most DC movies since TDK came out try to tout it as "the best DC movie since The Dark Knight", so now whenever i see that line used by reviewers to try to praise a DC movie, it just feels like a joke.

it's insane how much The Dark Knight just absolutely fucked the DCEU completely... you can trace so much of what has made DC's cinematic endeavors in the last decade so bad directly to that movie's success.

IMO the DCEU was fucked first by hiring Zack Snyder as the main visionary and secondly by trying to directly compete with MCU.

That was sort of the point I was trying to make, they hired Snyder hoping he'd give them more of what The Dark Knight did, thinking that dark, gritty etc was the way to go. What wasn't taken into account is that Snyder's idea of "mature" superhero movies was that Batman might say the f-word.
