Greetings Friends and Lovers,

First a big thanks to @Rip_City for running the always excellent Album of the Year thread for us again. I know it's a lot of work to sort through that, so I'm very grateful for all he does to make that a smooth and fun experience.

Last year I had a thought that this year I'd like to put in action. A couple categories that go beyond album of the year. And if there are any that no one is feeling or ones I didn't consider then please drop your suggestions here.

The key difference here is that we are not considering music exactly, we are considering the quality of the vinyl experience. From the jacket to the disc, and of course the quality of the pressing and the sound. This is about recognizing everything that goes into vinyl that isn't done by the musicians. Rule would be any record that received a physical release on vinyl in 2024.

  1. Vinyl Release of the Year
    1. Best Rock Vinyl
    2. Best Jazz Vinyl
    3. Best R&HH Vinyl
    4. Best Country/Folk/Americana
    5. Best RoW Vinyl
    6. Best Miscellaneous Vinyl
    7. Best Audiophile Vinyl
  2. Box Set of the Year
  3. Album Art of the Year
  4. Label of the Year
  5. Subscription of the Year
  6. Online Record Store of the Year
For each category, you can submit up to three nominations. We will then rank choice vote on the nominations to decide on the top three for each category. For Vinyl of the Year, we will rank choice vote out of the top three from each vinyl category.

I will put together a doc that can collect this info, but would like to see if others are interested and open it to discussion here.

My motivation is that I often want to know what the highest quality records are that came out on vinyl each year, and this seems like a fun way to have that conversation and share our thoughts as we look back at our year collecting.

Suggestion, I know it’s probably kind of assumed in the audiophile category but maybe a Reissue of the year category. Like the overall kind of winner possibly. Just thinking there have been a few years that a Numero, for example, may have been the best reissue but also not an audiophile release.

Also, maybe Comp of the year, again maybe the intention is that boxset could cover this but there are occasionally things like Al Green’s Greatest Hits that are so we’ll put together that it kind of trumps any of his album.

I was thinking reissue of the year would be a good one for sure.

Also, live album.

I was thinking of a separate reissue category, but I was also thinking that it's fair game to just have reissues be part of every category. The rules aren't that the album came out in 2024, only that the physical vinyl we're considering did.

Does it make more sense to separate them out and only have new albums that got a physical vinyl release during the year and then a catch all for only reissues?

I'm down for live as a category, since different recording skills play a role than they do in the studio, so that makes it distinct enough from the genre.

For comps, I kind of saw those as either fitting in the genre or the miscellaneous category. But am down with whatever y'all think.

I was just thinking that one reissue to rule them all. Like it could when rock and the reissue category.

I mean the megalist is already recognizing the crown for recording of the year.

Hmmmm, so I have not bought nearly as many albums this year as I have in the past. The packaging on the Chelsea Wolfe album with the tarot card add was nice, but the mix was muddled. I think I am most happy with the sound on my Allie X album but the new Kelly Lee Owen’s was nice too. We also picked up the RSD Ladytron repress and it was beautifully pressed.

I'm not sure I understand what you wrote here, but I was under the impression that the megalist is just about what the favorite album is of the year, doesn't really have anything much to do with recording quality, more just subjective enjoyment than anything technical.

Yes. My point being that we (well besides maybe that whale we’ve always wanted) expect something more from a reissue. So a reissue of the year sort of award that transcends genre.

Like the Grammys give best rock, best r&b, best gospel, right? But they still give a best overall. Like I said, it may already be covered under audiophile and probably is the more I think about it.

As always probably best to ignore me
