N&G AOTM Year 4.1: General Thread & Archive

Okay, so I'm going to give it until the end of this month to hear back from @chrb98 and/or @johnpisme about June/July. If neither of them respond we will be officially opening the roster back up to everybody for June's AotM.
I'm afraid I really should remove myself from the list for a while. I've gone back to school and am doing an accelerated program that finishes at the end of the year so time is at a premium. I look forward to next year, when I'll once again have time and disposable income again!

Sounds good - all the best with your program. Hope you still find a moment here and there to pop in and say hi!

Thanks! I have been dipping my head back in here from time to time and definitely will be back to chopping it up in the jazz threads and elsewhere as soon as I know everything there is to know about pharmacology, med surg, pathophysiology, etc...lol

Can I pencil myself in for perhaps February 2024? I have had my choice picked for a long time but just can't reliably say I could commit the time right now. I am definitely still interested, though!

I think I could be comfortable doing that since you're one of the last of original run before we reopen the line-up to all. If any of the others have objections to me doing so, I'm happy to discuss it further.

For clarity on my end, are you thinking February guess thread or February AotM?

Any advice for how to reach out to artists/labels about confirming availability of the record? or asking about discounts/AMAs?

It seems like we don't really do AMAs much anymore, right?

If I recall @scotthilk was the last one to do one, but I may be forgetting someone or mixing up the timeline (and my apologies if so!) If I'd gone with my original choice for AotM I probably would have cold called thr label about a possible discount and the label, management, Instagram and Twitter to try and reach out about an AMA. In John K. Samson's case though, he is very notoriously analogue - which I can fully dig but made the prospect of trying to do an AMA rather impractical.

Artists may be the trickier of the lot to reach, depending on how much label and management there is ahead of them but it never hurts to dig around a bit.

Labels for a discount seems a bit easier in terms of contact point and then it's just convincing them to play along, I reckon. We obviously don't have numbers and they fluctuate between releases and depending who may already have it or not. I'd suggest we would be looking at a spread of half a dozen to a couple dozen copies with a group that is often keen to support labels that get involved with our shenanigans, so if they offer a discount that covers more than the specific album, or any kind of bundles, they're likely to get more buy-in as well. Last thing I'd ask of the label is if they're able to cut any deals on international shipping. Not super likely, but couldn't hurt.

I'd be happy to offer up any and all help with this aspect of things if you want it at all. Obviously I'd recuse myself from the guess thread, if so. Just send me a DM if so!

[Edit] I spent a dozen years booking tours for myself and others, so I've gotten pretty comfortable with cold contacting folks - particularly by email. Phones I don't love, but will use as/if necessary.

I emailed the label and they were ok to offer a discount. As for the AMA it's a bit more complicated as it depends on what they are doing now. In my case they are starting a tour very soon so they are quite busy. Label still offered to send questions and they'll do their best to answer them.

Thanks for these responses - I've sent messages through bandcamp (which I'm assuming is going to the label) and via contact info listed on the artist's website, so we'll see what kind of response I get. At this point, I'm just asking them to confirm stock levels, but I also explained a bit about who we are and the site in general and asked if there's any more information they'd want to share about where they'd prefer for us to purchase the record and anything else about them or the album that they'd want us to know.

Been meaning to make the official call-out for a while, and now we are getting down to the wire so let's go...

Dearest Needles & Grooves community,

We have officially reached the rollover for contributors for our monthly Album of the Month selection. Congratulations and gratitude to all who have contributed so far, and more of both to those of you who will again (and, of course, to any first-timers that climb aboard at any time.

With @Ericj32's guess thread going live next weekend we have run the well dry of our first wave of contributors (with the exception of @johnpisme who is slotted in for the March 2024 AotM due to life commitments in the meanwhile) - that means we are opening the pool back up to EVERYBODY!

Thank you @Skalap for bringing about the second wave in style, and @Ericj32 for being agreeable to switching months. Full linearity is boring anyway!

The draw for who will be choosing June's AotM (and running May's guess thread) will happen sometime next week - so come join us!

I only regret that I didn't start playing along earlier. Really enjoyed the picks the last several months and look forward to picking again whenever my name may get called again. I've been put to shame from the guess threads since mine, so I'm excited to stump y'all next go around!
