My guess is Monoliths & Dimensions as they do count
Would Sun O))) count as metal?
it counts as terribleWould Sun O))) count as metal?
it counts as terrible
This is a good guess that fits the clues really well, though @Goatfish said the album had potential crossover appeal, which I took to mean it was on the more accessible side of metal / metal-adjacent which Sunn O))) are certainly not imo. Though my interpretation could just be flat out wrong in which case ignore me completely lolWould Sun O))) count as metal?
Did anyone say Deafheaven?
Sunbather by Deafheaven
I picked up Holy Diver a few years ago for a couple of quid (for the Holy Diver track alone). Only reason I heard that was becasue of the cameo on the Pick Of Destiny by Tenacious DI already have a copy. Like anyone with sanity/taste. All the cool kids have it.

Great minds think alike! HahaAfter reading the patents for what constitutes Metal/Metal Adjacent
My first guess is going to be:
System Of A Down– Toxicity
Being a minute late I will change it to
System Of A Down – Mezmerize
I'll throw Toxicity by System of a Down out there because I love that album.
Their debut is really good too, but Toxicity fits better with the "critical acclaim" clue. No other SOAD album really got the praise it did and still does.I always preferred their debut album back in the day. It’s been a long time since I last listened to either of them though!

I'm looking at it not only at the time they came out, but retrospectively as well as @Goatfish stated. And I feel like Toxicity has a much stronger critical reputation than the debut these days.I though their debut did? I’m sure I remember it being in the album of the year debates for that kind of music in 1998? Toxicity certainly had more crossover appeal and it did cross over to an extent but, as much as I liked it, I felt it did lose a bit of its edge in doing so...
