Needles & Grooves AoTM /// Vol. 2 - August 2019 /// Khemmis - Hunted

I love Lemmy. But I think even he just saw himself as ‘Rock & Roll’, extending on from Gene Vincent, Hendrix, etc. Dio gave us the devil horn hand gesture for goodness sake
I wasn’t meaning to imply that Lemmy is/was the personification of metal, just that he fills that role more so for me than Ronnie. But I’m not a Dio fan so that plays into it I’m sure. I respect what he did for the genre I just prefer Ozzy/Sabbath. 🤘🏻

Blue it is then. If it’s anything like Blue by Joni Mitchell or Blue by Simply Red i’m Sure i’ll Love it.

Happy listening! I think Blue improves on Red with slightly more thoughtful songwriting. Yellow & Green is also great but it has low points from being a bit too long. Purple is a grower, and really shows some progression in sound.

I'm still digesting Gold & Grey, but the production is total trash which is making it difficult.

Blue = Red > Yellow & Green > Gold & Grey > Purple

Haven't listened to their pre-Red stuff enough.

Pre-Red stuff is not essential at all IMO. Grey Sigh in a Flower Husk is OK. My personal ranking is:

1a. Blue
1b. Red
2. Purple (this used to be at the bottom but has grown on me HUGE)
3. Yellow
4. Gold & Grey
5. Green (I split them because Yellow is so much above Green for me)

Blue = Red > Yellow & Green > Gold & Grey > Purple

Haven't listened to their pre-Red stuff enough.
Also, don’t sleep on the First & Second EP’s either (you can actually find them as an Single LP). I would actually stick those up with Red & Blue as far as their best releases go. It’s more raw and a bit more rawkus than their later releases. It really kinda depends on your mood.

I might have to revisit First & Second, but I always preferred early Mastodon when looking for the thrashier sound of progressive sludge. I liked Baroness better when they found & refined their own sound.
