Hat tip to this album — and the song Goatfuzz with its Beatles-esque stereo mixing in particular — for making me discover this cable I bought from Radio Shack in 2000 has a bad left audio channel.

New cable update: left channel issue is still there so I guess the Radio Shack one is still good for another 20 years.
I have a very weird audio setup that routes my turntable through my PC so I have more troubleshooting to do. I now suspect there's some setting that's off with my sound card (I had some other problems with it a few months ago and now I wonder if my "fix" ended up causing this).
I just had a dreadful realization that maybe the reason my VMP copies of OutKast, Wu-Tang, and Mars Volta all sounded ok is because this messed-up audio channel was muting all the surface noise.
