Neverending Covid-19 Coronavirus

Meanwhile

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

the attitude of the UK authorities in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak is extremely irresponsible and worrisome.
As an Italian that is experiencing daily (indirectly) the impact of the outbreak, I cannot comprehend how they deem acceptable to let the virus spread unchecked, exposing hundred of thousand at risk people to the potential outcome of death.

they refer to "the science" in relation to the strategy they have chosen (creating herd immunity), while there is an extremely small amount of data and certainty for this specific virus.

All the schools in Edmonton are being shut down for the rest of the school year. All daycares, libraries & recreation centres are closed too.

I have a feeling this will happen here, too...but i think they are looking into doing some online coursework.

All this does have one benefit for me and my family here - my mom may not be able to visit in June....so that's nice.

The stupidity about this so-called "herd immunity" strategy is that it's what EVERYONE is doing. By opting to shut down, places are slowing the infection, not stopping it, to allow the health care system to cope. The end result will still be a level of herd immunity but after a bit longer of a period. And hopefully a lot less deaths due to lack of resources.

looking to the US, one thing that truly concerns me in relation to the correct representation of the COVID-19 cases, is the fact that testing is extremely limited.
I look daily at the figures available through the CDC website

The number of tests performed all through last week (and before that) is extremely small.
Tuesday (the last reliable number, as per CDC footnote), across the entire US country, only 2500 tests were perfomed.
The ratio of tests per population leaves the US behind countries such Italy, China, South Korea (as expected), but also behind Slovakia, Thailand, Armenia and Vietnam, to pick random countries.

This makes me believe that the infection is, while invisible, much more present than what the institutions present (and the orange man constantly lies about).

Aren't you ignoring the Public Labs though? Maybe I'm misunderstanding, that page isn't very clear to me but I guess it's closer to 15-20k including the Public Labs, right? Still a relatively insignificant number and an embarrassment for sure. I think everything you said still applies.

if you look at the CDC data, the Public Labs testing numbers are included.
My 2500 test was referencing daily tests.
Globally the US seems to have performed around 15000 tests, as of tuesday 10th March.

Sorry, I misunderstood that sentence. My bad.

Yeah, when did SK start doing 10k tests a day? A month ago? How much bigger is the USA than them? And we have the "best healthcare in the world."

Briefly spoke to my exhausted doctor friend yesterday who has been admitting into the ICU at a NE Ohio hospital for the past few days. He says it's starting to get very bad. He says they've probably had multiple people with it, but they've only been able to test 3 because there aren't any tests anywhere. They've had to intubate multiple people and if it continues to get worse "we are so fucked". They can't test people and they don't have any treatments so far. They can only intubate and hope that people eventually get better. They WILL run out of ventilator machines and what we've seen in Italy with medical staff having to decide who gets one and who doesn't WILL be happening here at some point if it continues getting worse. They also don't have many masks and the supplies, in his words, aren't going to get better. They have had to start reusing them all day and ration them out so they can have some later.
