New Music Friday!

New Julia Holter definitely has a lot of good stuff going on in it. I have only listened to it once, but there were some amazing songs on it. Definitely sounds like a continuation of Aviary’s experimental side - albeit maybe a little less experimental all the way through. Can’t wait to really sit and focus with the record this weekend.

Also loving the new Waxahatchee. I love this direction she’s taken. The songs are just instantly good and catchy and interesting. Some great songwriting here too, but I just love the feeling of this entire album.

The new Adrianne Lenker is basically what I expects , some really mellow songs with fantastic writing. Not as immediately good as a Big Thief album, nor is it quite there for me the way Abysskiss was. But I think it could open up with some more listens. Maybe.

Same. And what's your current ranking? Oddly, as I don't think any other artist follows this same pattern for me, my rank is a reverse chronological order. (1 Aviary, 2 HYIMW, 3 LCS, 4 Ekstasis, 5 Tragedy).
This week's release excluded, I'm currently at:
  1. Loud City Song [favorite album of the 2010s; honestly believe coming across this record in the exact time and place was a significant butterfly effect of my life. Among the most impactful, resonant and singular pieces of art I have encountered. A major impact in influencing the music I would gravitate toward to the present day. If I ever am fortunate enough to hear her rendition of "Hello Stranger" in a live setting, man, it's ugly cry time]
  2. Aviary [extravagant, lush, vast, dissonant, and wondrous. Most artists would kill to have an achievement like Julia created here. I can hear how she was influenced by Alice Coltrane right from the jump with "Turn the Light On," it's so very obvious. She likes a lot of my top50 artists anyways 🥰]
  3. Have You In My Wilderness [lower than most, I know. I want to be clear that I still love this record to bits. But my favorite Julia is weird Julia, and she doesn't explore a significant portion of that side to her personality here. What she does have on display on this record, however, is some of the most gorgeous (and accessible!) art pop songs of 2010s, bar none. "Betsy on the Roof" is GOATed. It is the ideal entry point for a curious listener]
  4. Tragedy [her debut; the one that might be the most challenging for those not accustomed to drone/experimental music. Sounds nothing at all like her future work. "Finale" is a fully encompassing beaut. So uncompromising and strange...yet beguiling]
  5. Ekstasis [there has to be one at the bottom. Still great. Her first entry into the art pop world, although maybe some experiments don't work as well as others here. "Boy in the Moon" is among my top10 Julia songs]

Ruined is like one of the best songs on the album!
I just gotta second this. Ruined is a stunning track imo, and even though released as a single, so I've had serious time with it, I'd be surprised if another track stepped up to take the crown in this album's collection of songs.

Glad some people love this album, it's fine that some are underwhelmed. My own two cents with an artist like Lenker: she's one of those artists that I need serious time with her new music before I make a judgement. We'll see if I'm still playing this album regularly three months from now, I'm really not sure yet, but it's possible. I will say, while the first track was so sparse musically, it was crushingly beautiful at the end. I mean, how much will I listen to a track describing her first experience seeing her mother cry, and holding her family dog as it was euthanized, really not sure, but damn, that shit is damn powerful. Adrianne feels hard, and I'm glad she shares it.
