Sasami is usually always great, but I haven't liked many of the singles from this one and I actually cancelled my pre-order of the album until I hear it for myself

Funny, I'm in quite the opposite camp. I've not really enjoyed anything she's put out up until this point. But I keep going back to give her another chance. One of the singles for her new album wasn't too bad either 🤷‍♂️

Yeah I think Sasami is kinda mid at best.
We've seen her twice. Once with Japanese Breakfast and once with DIIV. Maybe you just need to see her live first. I bought her debut at the merch table when we saw her with JB and have been a fan ever since. I don't think there's a bad song on those first two albums but nothing has excited me about this new one. I think maybe it's a little too pop.

I'm glad you've enjoyed her live. And I appreciate the rec. But I have absolutely no desire to see her live 🤷‍♂️

Edit: just realized your response was to Rip and not me, lol. Regardless, I still feel the same.

For me, I am only looking at maybe my top 10 to 15 albums from each year and basing my ranking on how much I enjoy those records.
Same. Partly why I have created Top10 lists for each year on my RYM.
Many of you listen to more mediocre to meh new albums in a month than I will listen to all year.
And that's because.. you only listen to quality albums? 🤔 You can't find the gem unless you search through all the dirt and mud 😉

I give money to NPR for this. All Songs Considered does the job of fine combing through all the albums. Also the yearly file dump of SXSW songs helps a lot. Are they promoting industry plants? I don't know. They've turned me onto stuff that would've otherwise flown under my radar.

Nah, man. There are music critics and friends and RIYL lists and streaming algorithms and artist recommendations and Record collecting message boards, and TV commercials, and Social Media and record label PR, and etc. etc… I keep my ear to the ground and when/If something piques my interest I will play a few tracks and if that I enjoy that I will listen to the whole album. Maybe I don’t get there first but it’s a much more efficient and enjoyable way for me to find the stuff that I dig.
