New ultrasonic vinyl cleaner in the works: Humminguru

For sure. The indoor humidity levels are likely quite low in Chicago, and fan-drying the records with dry air will cause a buildup of static.

I highly recommend getting a Thunderon brush. I have similar winter static problems in Virginia and it's made a huge difference.

Another vote for the Thunderon. I had massive static issues and between the Thunderon and a cork mat I've become pop free.

What cork mat are you using? Thinking about trying one out on my garage setup on my PLX-1000 where it can get very dry when it’s cold out.

Nothing extravagant but it works perfectly. Bought from Hudson HiFi during one of their sales. I think it was $8 or $9. Actually using it on a PLX1000...

This one is kind of unique as it has slightly raised 3/4" diameter circles spread throughout the mat. The photo isn't accurate on their website but based on their description this is it...

Hey Folks,

I’m getting tired of the manual work involved in the spin clean and am considering the Humminguru. Is there a general consensus on it? People loving it? Hating it? Is it worth the money? Any input is appreciated!

I upgraded from the spin clean to the Humminguru and haven't had one moment of regret. I've cleaned probably 1,000+ albums and my machine is still hummin' along.

Thanks for the input everyone! I hear there is debate around whether to just use distilled water or to add other chemicals. Do those who just use the water have issues with drying or water spots left on the records after cleaning?

Depending on the humidity levels in my house, yes, but it’s easy enough to run an extra drying cycle.

As far as additives, I am firmly pro-G-Sonic.

Anyone have issues with the clean button just not working? Dry button is fine, clean just won’t turn on - neither on auto or clean setting.

First time I’ve had any issues with this machine.

Yes. They’ll run you through trouble shooting steps but for mine they had to send me out a couple of new pcbs to change to fix it.

It’s been good as gold again for the last 9 months since.

You won’t get drying spots if you use distilled water exclusively instead of tap water.

That being said, I use a very dilute cleaning formula which contains 1 to 2 drops of JetDry per 1 gallon of distilled water. That makes drying faster and the vinyl more luminous. JetDry is designed to work at low dilution rates.

I use my HummingGuru frequently when playing records. Very happy with it and the results.

You do in humid environs. It gets really humid here in winter and I have to go to 10 mins and still get the odd spot even with de ionised water and the g sonic.

I’m curious about that. Water spots come from dissolved minerals in water that show up when drying. Distilled water is not supposed to have any dissolved minerals.

JetDry may be a solution for you. It has chelating agents that bind dissolved minerals to keep them off the cleaned surface. Try it on a less valuable record and see how you like it.

De ionised doesn’t either. They’re removed by an electrolysis type procedure. It’s fine. In winter we approach the high 90s in humidity, everything right down to your washing is bastard to full dry. I just wipe off any remaining spots with a clean microfibre cloth.
