New ultrasonic vinyl cleaner in the works: Humminguru

My reply:

I have two concerns. One being if I deactivate the thermal protection will the warranty still be valid? I have only ever used the unit as directed and I'm a bit upset that it has failed to operate normally so quickly. I'm also not exactly thrilled that I would have to send back the unit at my expense after only being able to use it for a month. Overseas shipping is really expensive and I'm not eager to spend another month without a cleaner.

If you could please send me the instructions to attempt to make the repair I am willing to give it a shot. If that does not work then I guess we will need to discuss a warranty repair or even a replacement.
This sounds totally reasonable to me.

That seems absolutely fine. It’s not antagonistic and you set out your position clearly. I probably wouldn’t have offered to fix it myself and wouldn’t have pushed for them to cover shipping in both directions, but that’s more because I’m not capable…
This is my curse. I am always willing to try and fix something to better understand how it works if I need to fix it out of warranty in the future. I feel like getting all these breadcrumbs will eventually help someone else troubleshoot.

So, like, you're welcome?

I finally made the error of running a clean cycle with no liquid in the chamber. Everything sounds normal until the thermal switch kicks in and saves everything from destruction. Under no circumstances would I disable it.

Interesting. So this is a thermal switch to save the ultrasonics and not a water temp thing?

Didn't they send out a bulletin about water temps though? My memory is hazy.
Not that I recall. Folks here have said they've seen better results using slightly warm water, but afaik the water in the tank only increases by a degree or two for every 5 minute session. It would take a lot of back-to-back washes to cause problems.

I think somewhere they provided a max water temperature for cleaning, noting that there would be some minor heating in the process of cleaning multiple records. I don't recall anything in the form of a bulletin; my recollection is that they were responding to questions about water temperature.

Oh wait, found this: Safety (This also may shed some light on what they were advising you if you proceed without the thermal protection switch.)

Yeah it only rises noticeably when you get a really dirty record and put it through 3 or 4 cleaning cycles before drying. With multiple records having the single clean it just seems to cool off again during the drying cycle.

Yeah I figured the drying would be enough time to let things cool down. Even after cleaning 25 records straight the water felt warmer than room temp but not hotter than my palm.

Yeah it does. When I’ve been doing long sessions of just recleans I haven’t noticed anything. When I’ve done some really dirty used pick ups and put them through 3 or 4 clean cycles before drying it does warm up. Do 3 or 4 of those records in a row and it does actually get quite warm, bordering on hot.

Seems like there’s some value in running really grody records through a Spin Clean or Squeaky Clean to get the thick grime off before putting it into the HG for a deep clean.

Potentially yes but equally I don’t mind just tapping the clean button a few times. It does work, especially since I’ve started using the G Sonic.

Update #253...

The proposed fix this time is to strip the double black wires, twist them together (thereby short circuiting the temp sensor), and hoping for the best. This of course is just in time for there IG post saying Covid is flaring back up and shipping is delayed indefinitely.

Cool cool.

Also they said the best way to strip the wire is with your fingernails, and guess who trimmed his fingernails yesterday...

I believe the Insta post was concerning shipping into HK.

The whole story is a bad look for them.
Im a supporter of fixing something if possible first. But come on, you went through a lot of troubleshooting allready and have clearly tried and spent a lot of time on this. If they want it fixed they should send you a shipping label , at the end of the day a replacement unit would save everyone some extra time and probably money too.

That's my hope is that I now have a bit more bargaining for return shipping on their dime. I did a quick check on shipping estimates and the low end at USPS was $70.
