NHL Thread Because There Isn't An NHL Thread

Looks like they were well rested and the Oilers were tired.

The Oilers did have 6 days off before a 3-in-4 though. Montreal has had a pretty good go at the Edmonton defense so far this year. Edmonton has not been at all able to take away the speed (and Edmonton was the same vs Toronto the bits I watched, so this is not necessarily all fatigue, though, sure, they can use the excuse if it leads them to change nothing before next game).

The Vancouver Canucks and goaltender Thatcher Demko have agreed to a five-year, $25-million extension, reports Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Demko is in the midst of a breakout season, posting a .917 save percentage and a 2.77 goals-against average in 25 games so far this year. He also ranks fifth in the NHL in goals saved above expected, according to Evolving-Hockey.

The 25-year-old netminder's success this season follows his coming-out party during the 2020 postseason. Replacing an injured Jacob Markstrom, Demko stopped 128 of 130 shots in four appearances against the Vegas Golden Knights before the Canucks were eliminated.

The Canucks let Markstrom walk as a free agent after Demko's strong playoff showing this summer and signed veteran Braden Holtby to a two-year, $8.6-million deal. Demko has thoroughly outplayed Holtby and solidified himself as the team's No. 1 goalie moving forward.

Vancouver selected Demko 36th overall in the 2014 draft. The native of San Diego was set to become a restricted free agent in the offseason.

Demko, defenseman Quinn Hughes, and forward Elias Pettersson made up a trio of key RFAs the Canucks had to sign following the campaign. With Demko's deal reportedly taken care of, Vancouver projects to have just over $20 million in cap space this offseason with a roster size of only 12, according to CapFriendly.

Looks like the Canucks could have saved some cash by playing the Habs a few more times.

Damn, that's a lot of money for goalies next year. How Benning got himself into this cap crunch I have no idea.
I could definitely see Benning dealing him in the off-season, possibly with retaining some of his salary. He was the "insurance policy" in case Demko wasn't ready to make the full jump to starter over the course of a full season. Looks like he's asserted himself into that spot, and I would think they would rather fill the backup spot with Michael DiPietro if Thatcher is number one.

👏

The Ottawa Senators continued to ink their college players to pro deals Thursday, signing University of North Dakota forward Shane Pinto to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Pinto will report to the Senators after a mandatory quarantine period.

The 20-year-old was named one of three finalists for the Hobey Baker Award - bestowed annually to the NCAA's top men's hockey player - just a few hours before Ottawa announced the signing.

Pinto produced 15 goals and 17 assists across 28 games in his second collegiate campaign. The Senators drafted him 32nd overall in 2019.

Ottawa also signed Pinto's NCAA teammate, defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker, to an entry-level pact Thursday. The Senators selected Bernard-Docker 26th overall in 2018.

It’s awesome when everyone is as intense as Brendan!

Alright. Wait.

How the hell are the Islanders so damn good this year

Yeah, they surprise me every year too. Barry Trotz is the best player on that team haha I can't name anyone else! It's the team defense and the goalie whisperer Mitch Korn. But then again they put up 8 on my Caps last night so maybe there's some offense involved too haha

Really!? You can't name any NYI players? How about Anders Lee, the captain for starters or Matthew Barzal, their leading point getter, Jordan Eberle, Brock Nelson, Josh Bailey, J-G Pageau, Nick Leddy on defense and Varlamov between pipes or about the best name in hockey 🏒 in Cal Clutterbuck 🤔😉

haha yeah, a little sarcasm in my post, but it's still amazing to me what this team can do without any true superstars.

Word on the street (Darren Dreger) is that there are an additional 6 positive COVID tests for the Canucks (not all players). They may be out a while longer.

EDIT: I read elsewhere that 5 additional players were added to the COVID protocol list today, making it now 7. I'd expect at least another week of games to be cancelled, mostly because it will get difficult to ice a team. How long this will go will obviously depend on how many of these are actual positive tests and how many are contacts. I feel really bad for the fans. This is bad luck.

The Vancouver Canucks' COVID-19 outbreak might be worse than initially feared.
😳😬

"There are additional cases identified Friday evening, and perhaps what's more scary to most of us throughout society is that the Brazil variant has been identified in some of the cases that have infected members of the Vancouver Canucks," TSN's Darren Dreger said on SportsCentre.

"Now, I'm told that there are cases here in Vancouver with the Canucks where the individuals are very ill. It's something that we're going to have to continue to monitor."

There were seven Canucks players on the NHL's COVID-19 list as of Friday: Quinn Hughes, Braden Holtby, Alex Edler, Adam Gaudette, Travis Hamonic, Zack MacEwen, and Antoine Roussel. The list is updated daily at 5 p.m. ET.

The Canucks haven't played since March 24 against the Winnipeg Jets. Their games have been postponed through at least April 6.
