NHL Thread Because There Isn't An NHL Thread

Wow! This comes as a shock to me 😲

Goaltender Corey Crawford has announced his retirement from the NHL after playing 10 seasons and appearing in 488 regular-season games.

"I have been fortunate to have had a long career playing professional hockey for a living. I wanted to continue my career, but believe I've given all I can to the game of hockey, and I have decided that it is time to retire," Crawford said in a statement.

The 36-year-old won two Stanley Cups with the Chicago Blackhawks and recently signed with the New Jersey Devils.

More to come.
I just saw this on Twitter and I’m going to be honest, I thought it was Cory Schneider 😂

Does tomorrow afternoon at, say, 3:00 Eastern work for everyone for a draft? Let me know.

We'll also have to decide scoring categories and roster construction. I propose we keep it fairly simple: maybe 2 C, 2 RW, 2 LW, 4 D, and 2 goalies, with 2 or 3 bench positions so there's not too much maintenance. Unlimited trades, but maybe only 2 or 3 free agent adds per week so you can't cycle infinitely and win via simply more games played. Minimum 3 goalie appearances per week.

For scoring, I hate using plus-minus because it disincentivizes choosing players from bad teams and PIM because you shouldn't get points for a player being a liability on his team.

that time should be ok with me, 3:30 too

just tell me what I need to do in advance to be ready (set-up an account, etc)

Also, should we do it so that each week's matchup is just worth *one* win, loss, or tie (as is common in most fantasy football leagues, I believe)? Or, if there are (for example) 15 stat categories, you can win, lose, or tie all 15 and your record could go like 7-6-2 on the week, and then accumulate that way? I think I prefer the latter for hockey and is how I've generally always done it. I'm not totally sure how the players' stats would add up to create "points" in the former option as they do in fantasy football.

These are my options:

  1. Head-to-Head - Daily Points: The same as weekly points, except you can edit rosters for every day of the week.
  2. Head-to-Head - Weekly Points: Just like Fantasy Football, play against a different team each week to earn the most points. Rosters are set weekly, not daily.
  3. Head-to-Head - Categories: Compete against a different team each week to win the most stat categories. Each win, loss or tie counts in the league standings.
  4. Head-to-Head - One Win: Compete each week against a different team to win the most stat categories. Unlike standard head-to-head, the team winning most categories earns one win in the standings.
So, I think my vote is option 3, but 4 could also work.

Option #3 or #4 probably works best for a fantasy hockey 🏒 league but what do I know having not participated in one in a very long time 😆

Your call. I'll play by whatever rules you choose. The last time I played (9-10 years ago?) was just points for dressed players but this had a tendency to produce runaway leaders with very little chance to catch-up. These head-to-head rules sound like they'd be better at avoiding that.

Alright, I'll set it up for option #3. I think that's best for now. I might be able to change it again before the season starts if we change our mind.

I'll also try to set the draft for 3:15pm Eastern tomorrow. That way @teefer hopefully doesn't have to go out of his way as much as 3 and @Crabbers can at least be there for the first 45 minutes and we'll probably get most of the draft done by then.

That's fine for me, thanks!
