No Buy Vinyl Support Thread

Bought into Joyful Noise early bird again for 25 after I really dug their 24 run. Otherwise I am going to try to buckle down and go no buy for a bit. There is a realistic shot at getting my mortgage and home equity paid off this year!

I've got a ton of pre-orders in the queue, plus my PIFsgiving haul all slated to arrive in the first couple/few months of the new year. Gonna try keep a pretty tight Q1 over here.*

*Birthday money meant for records doesn't count, and my usual Sun Ra Clause will be in place

Feel like I really fell off the wagon for the 2nd half of the year. I have 4 pre-paid pre-orders but nothing else in the pipeline for 2025 so hopefully I can do a no-buy for at least the first couple of months.

Looking back on 2024, at least I did not overall increase my vinyl collection this year. Got rid of just over 50 records and added 48.

Back in to participating for the rest of 2024.

Made one online order of 5 LPs yesterday from a new favorite brick & mortar in Washington I had a great experience with, which will be my last order of the year. Just that and one lone preorder from the Target B2G1 sale a few weeks ago remains.
Have stuck to this. The aforementioned brick & mortar and Target orders arrived in early November. Haven't purchased a record since October and won't until April next year; midway through upcoming Japan vacation. Nothing pending/en route, either. Only additions I've made since October are a pair of Christmas gifts from my younger brother.

Hopefully there will be a local record convention early next year; I would like to participate as an in-person seller for the first time. I could probably set aside 150-250 records to lighten the collection count.

EDIT: Adjusted second sentence to include mention of Target.

Probably in for a Q1 no buy again. I’ve bought a billion records recently so plenty to go through, while also paying off some recent big buys (and saving for future big buys)

Yeah these 50% off sales have been killing me so it'll be a lean Q1 here as well. Only preorder is the Eddie Hazel Rhino Reserve.

Might try to offload some records I don't spin much and use that money to buy a few things I've had my eye on though. That counts right?

My rule last year was no cash spent on records for Q1 but I could spend trade-in/sale money or gift cards (I get some from a health insurance incentive).

No Buy (OK, less buying) 2024 Report:

4 records - Used up the last of my VMP Subscription & Credits.
8 records - Finally received the VMP Impulse! Anthology...that I ordered in 2023.
1 record - From the @Yer Ol' Uncle D Record Club! He's the best!
3 records - Bought at Road Dogs Records (my local brick and mortar store) on Record Store Day.
3 records - Bought at Ditch Records on a trip to Victoria, BC for nostalgia.

So 19 records acquired, but only actually spent money on 6 records in 2024. Not bad.

Definitely didn’t have a no buy year but…

Up to December 17th I had only bought 6 records. Then knowing starting in January a benefit at my work is a lifestyle spending account. Lucky for me records are included. So I went nuts with pp pay in 4. Bought 9 since for a total of 15. This was mostly making up for albums I didn’t buy this year and some preorders for next year. I also pif’d 9 and received 10 pifs. Last but not least I sold 93 records on Discogs or to friends.😢 I had to thin out my collection and money wise it was a tuff year and I’m glad it’s over. Hope to keep this year about the same on purchases.

Thank you @Dirtbag Auntie for pointing me to this thread! Boy do I need it right now. I've got some money burning a hole in my pocket, and a million ideas of what to do with it. And I'm looking at things many people will find somewhat silly honestly.

Things that are tempting me:
- AQ Hurricane power cable for the phonostage (don't know why I'm trying to rush it. I haven't even tested it using the cables I have at home)
- Cardas Clear Beyond phono cable (Don't know why I'm rushing it, I don't even know yet if it will fit on my phonostage yet)
- Wireworld Silver Eclipse interconnects or speaker cables (don't even know why I'm looking at it, I should be saving for the cables I know I actually want)
- New cartridge: this is probably the wisest choice in the mix. I really don't need to wait for a new TT to get a new cart. But sometimes I see a deal and I get tempted 😬

Deep down I know if I save for a few more months, I can more easily jump into the stuff I REALLY want. But man, I just have the itch right now and it's been getting at me badly. I also know I shouldn't be spending anything until after Southwest Audio Fest because there could be a deal there that I'll want to jump on. It's only 8 weeks away but if feels like an eternity!
Someone talk me off the ledge!

Its hard, especially when you get a bit of $ when you are not expecting it. Our provincial government sent $200 cost of living cheques this week. For some reason I thought I did not qualify but got it. I immediately deposited it into my retirement account so it was like I never had the money. If it ended up sitting in regular bank account even for a couple of days, I would have spent it on something.

Yeah, this isn't quite that lucky. I knew it was coming. Just closed in on a few other things first and now I'm more trying to prioritize what's next.

Welp, I failed. Got a great offer on a NIB Hana ML. So either I just got scammed, or I've got a cartridge upgrade on the way.

But now it's seriously back to saving. I just discovered the RigidRack line of racks from butcher block acoustics and I am in love!
We have been working on making the music room more "cozy" by my wife's definition, while also not taking away from my technical audio desires. I think this piece would work perfectly, and really dress things up nicely!
