Yeah, I gave Out to Lunch a try. Not a fan of the avant-garde, free jazz stuff. Sounds like nails on the chalkboard to me. Even some of Thelonious Monk's stuff wears on me a bit.

Definitely like hard bop, fusion, soul jazz, jazz-funk, modal, etc.

I'm the exact same way - can't get in to Out to Lunch or The Shape of Jazz to Come at all...but give me all the Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, etc etc

uDiscover took almost a month, but they ended up refunding me completely for a couple of BN Classics with pressing defects, told me to keep them!

It's true. I've heard things for years without connecting and then they randomly click with me one day. Then there are other things that probably never will, because they just aren't "my thing" and likely never will be.

A lot of this stuff isn't the catchiest stuff to put on in all scenarios anyway. My son was into weird experiment freakout, free jazz and drone music since he was tiny, but I'm not unaware that's kind of an anomaly.

I bought a Milt Jackson album when I was young and I think that made me like vibraphones and want to hear more of them.

Are you a fan of any of the Mike Dillon stuff? He plays with Claypool quite a bit.

Critters Buggin’ is quintessential Mike D for me, and, if you like vibes, Black Frames. But he’s great in almost any context. I’ve seen him many dozens of times in a bunch of different acts. I haven’t yet seen his Punk Rock Percussion Consortium, but we’ll be in Nola for the week of jazz fest in 2025 so hoping he resurrects it then.

I should have mentioned GAT, too, but I’m not so into the original with Charlie Hunter. The Dillon/Skerik/Stanton Moore/Marco Benevento lineup was the shit, and particularly nuts live.

I would say bass or drums. Out To Lunch is a fav of mine, and Tony Williams is simply sublime on that album.

Spent a little time with Critters because of Skerik's involvement, but it has been years. Been listening to Garage a Trois lately, but it must be the albums without Dillon. Forgot he was involved with that group actually. This latest Garage a Tois KEXP session is soooooo good! I recommend to every one of yous on this forum.

That's interesting, because I liked the Benevento incarnation, too. That said, I di remember enjoying Outre Mer.
