I'll just chime in and say that I own the Wax Time pressing of Cannonball's Somethin' Else and it does not sound particularly good.

Seriously though, I think with most thing any time someone say all of something is great or terrible they are gonna get themselves in trouble. As long people are aware going in what they are purchasing that’s all that matters. Wax Time is readily available and for a lot of folks with less than stellar hi-fi setups they can be a nice cheap entry into the world of Jazz and/or Vinyl.

I don’t know if anyone was advocating for Wax Time. Dude was just saying that though the general consensus is Wax Time records put out a shoddy product, there are some albums that that are alright. Not all of them but a few.

Exactly. When I first got into jazz, I was OK with the idea of buying +/- $10 grey market reissues of classic jazz albums; they served their purpose as very large, overpriced CD-Rs.

Now, several years later, I realize that I never reach for those cheap Wax Time reissues anymore, because they don't sound good (for the sake of comparison, the often-criticized BN75 reissues sound noticeably better). So my message is more of a "buyer beware," i.e. understand that you're probably just paying for a placeholder in your collection, rather than something that will provide much joy.
 
I own quite a few waxtime and dol pressings, source material aside they tend to be well pressed in terms of being flat and and reasonably quiet and I have never had one that wasn't glossy and mirror like. I'm not attempting to speak to the music itself and how it sounds relative to other pressings and formats. That being said assuming you are paying $10-$15 usd they are reasonable. This seems especially relevant for albums where original or early reissues are hard to find and or very costly and these are an entry point if you prefer records over the various digital options.
 
I can appreciate that in good faith most people just want to let people know what they are getting into before they make a purchase they may later regret. Especially that these do not warrant more then a $15 price tag, especially albums that have more desirable and affordable reissues available like with a lot of the Miles Davis and John Coltrane catalog for instance (especially because these are often the variety people often first buy). I’ve been most disappointed in the BN 75 series I have a dozen or so and they all have significant surface noise and most were warped significantly.
