Pity some good titles are OOS.

I know the board has been pretty quiet over the holidays, but I wanted to ask this thread a quick question:

What's your threshold for sending back an album due to outer sleeve/jacket damage on a new purchase? I have received three Blue Note Classics in the last few weeks (each from different sources) and there have been long creases in the lower-left corner of each of them. It's clear that those BN Classics can't take much contact before folding - even in decent mailers. The vinyl in each case has been unaffected.

So, when do you send back/exchange for cosmetic imperfections? (Note: I don't think I will ever sell these titles - so I won't be trying to resell.)

Always tough to decide, compounded by experiencing this in successive instances. My first question would be whether it looked like this happened during shipping (as evidenced by relevant damage to the packaging) or appears to have been sent as you've received it (shipping package perfectly intact. In the latter case, I might reach out to the seller to let them know the jacket is damaged and it doesn't appear to have happened during the shipping process--no harm in seeing what they have to say about it. But ultimately, given that you are not planning to re-sell, unless you had your heart set on somehow displaying a perfect example of the said album jacket, as long as the vinyl is fine. I could live with that (though as stated, three in a row kinda sucks).

I agree with @Russ I. I used to care more than I have lately. If it's a big seller then I'll usually make an ask if it was shipped damaged and they didn't give me a heads up before buying/shipping. I don't usually like to bother the small locals with cosmetic stuff, only if the vinyl is f'ed. I'd probably reach out to a discogs seller though cause some folks just be shady on there and at least see what they say. I'm so sick of dealing with shipping back vinyl warps, that I've been getting less likely to want to deal with anything else so long as the tunes play.

I'm glad you posted this. Today I got a Curtis Mayfield album from Bullmoose that has a crushed corner and the start of a seam split. In the past I would most likely email and try to get a replacement but lately I'm thinking about the amount of waste sending it back and getting a new one sent to me, what the shop needs to go through to get reimbursed (or do they have to eat the cost) etc etc. So now I'll be more willing to accept minor cosmetic issues as long as the records play ok.

Thanks for the responses. The waste issue is an important one. And honestly, my tolerance for jacket/sleeve issues are to the point where it's not worth the hassle as long as the vinyl is undamaged.

I also agree that local considerations matter as well. Unfortunately, I got these three from Target, DeepDiscount and UDiscover.

Target's CS is mostly good. Deep Discount's is so terrible it pisses me off way too much to deal with them now. Udiscover is sometimes good and sometimes unresponsive. With these players I might bug them all with an email then move on regardless.

For relativley standard releases (Tone Poet and below), I don’t bother for reasons stated by others. In theory, I get more picky as premium pricing kicks in, but the sources of premium stuff tend to shop more carefully to begin with.
This is me. It's one reason I'm largely ok buying from e.g. Amazon warehouse. If it plays it stays, more or less.

Sadly, for me, this often has a lot to do with timing and the general level of energy that I have to deal with anything as a person at any given moment.

Looks like Udiscover has Velvet Underground's Matrix Tapes box set back in stock. With the 30% discount, it's $140.

HEADS UP: Looks like there are only 17 of these left

That’s where I’m at as well. I see crushed corners and other cosmetic defects as an acceptable trade off for the convenience of having records delivered to my doorstep.

Ah, that looks familiar. I have that styrofoam housing sitting in my basement and now I 'remember' where it came from! Damn nice packaging (must occur at the point of origin for the box set).

They used that exact packaging for the super deluxe All Things Must Pass and something else I can't recall right now that I bought in the last year or so. The last time the outer box was thrashed but the actual box set inside was still near flawless due to that awesome Styrofoam housing which is def. great for protection. I wish more places used it for bigger, heavier items.
